Student Food Service Assistant
Job Description
Location: East Neighborhood Akers/Holmes
Pay = 14.73/hour
Note: Due to the minimum wage increase at MSU, the starting rate for this position will be $16 effective 8/9/26. Those hired prior to 8/9/26 will be brought to the new minimum.
As a Student Food Service Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting full-time staff members with the preparation, cooking, and serving of food for all meal options for that venue. You must also be knowledgeable of all relevant food safety regulations, standards, and guidelines to ensure the safe handling and serving of all meals to customers. It is your job to make sure the guests of Culinary Services receive the most outstanding customer service.
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
โข Cooking, preparing, and serving food in dining halls
โข Kitchen clean up after meals are served
โข Communicate with supervisors, managers, and other student team members to ensure customer assistance
โข Coordinate with Student Supervisors job tasks to be completed each shift
Required Qualifications
โข Be enrolled as a student at Michigan State University (during academic year)
โข Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service
โข Must be able to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision
โข Must be positive and respectful, especially when working with a diverse population
โข Be able to work nights, mornings, and weekends
- Availability to work 5 or more hours weekly

Physical Demands
Lifting: Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
Work Hours
Dining hall hours vary per semester.
โข Must be able to work varied shifts, including early mornings (possible start 6:00AM), nights (until 10 PM), and weekends
โข You will be scheduled for weekend shifts on an alternating weekend basis
โข During the school year domestic student employees may not work more than 29 hours per work week, and international student employees may not work more than 20 hours per work week
โข During school breaks, between semesters, and during Summer semester, all student employees are permitted to work up to 40 hours per work week when dining halls are open and if work is available.
