PT DAY Position Summary

The Classroom Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality educational and therapeutic services within Rochester Hearing & Speech Center (RHSC) classrooms. Working under the supervision of certified teachers and clinical staff, the Classroom Assistant helps maintain a safe, structured, and engaging environment while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory, Medicaid, and program requirements.

This role is essential in supporting student engagement, reinforcing instructional goals, and maintaining accurate classroom operations that meet New York State Department of Health (DOH), Early Intervention (EI), Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), and Medicaid standards.

Key ResponsibilitiesClassroom & Student Support
  • Assist teachers and clinicians in implementing individualized educational and therapeutic plans (IEPs/IFSPs)
  • Provide direct support to students during instructional activities, transitions, meals, and play
  • Reinforce speech, language, behavioral, and developmental goals as directed
  • Support students with varying abilities, including physical, emotional, and communication needs
  • Maintain appropriate student supervision at all times to ensure safety and compliance
Compliance & Documentation Support
  • Follow all RHSC policies related to HIPAA, confidentiality, and Medicaid compliance
  • Assist in maintaining accurate daily classroom records (attendance, activity logs, service tracking support)
  • Ensure all classroom documentation aligns with services delivered and scheduled
  • Report any discrepancies in scheduling, service delivery, or documentation to supervisory staff immediately
  • Support audit readiness by maintaining organized, complete, and accurate classroom materials
Health, Safety & Environment
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment
  • Follow infection control, sanitation, and safety protocols
  • Support emergency procedures and student-specific safety plans
  • Ensure materials and equipment are used appropriately and stored securely
Team Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, service coordinators, and administrative staff
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with team members
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and compliance-related education as required
Family Interaction (as appropriate)
  • Maintain professional, courteous interactions with families
  • Refer all clinical or program-specific questions to appropriate licensed or supervisory staff
  • Support a welcoming and respectful environment for families and visitors
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience working with children preferred (early childhood, special education, or related field)
  • Ability to follow direction and implement structured plans
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and assist children as needed (up to 40 lbs with assistance if required)
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
Compliance Statement

The Classroom Assistant is responsible for supporting RHSC’s Compliance Program in accordance with 18 NYCRR Part 521, including adherence to the eight elements of an effective compliance program. All staff are expected to report concerns related to safety, service delivery, documentation, or regulatory compliance.

Failure to follow compliance standards may result in corrective action up to and including termination.
