Job description

Job Responsibilities Are you looking to be part of an innovative team of professionals dedicated to telling South Carolina's diverse stories through exhibitions, programs, events, online resources and more. Interested in creating unique, engaging, and impactful graphic design featuring everything from dinosaurs to jazz concerts to major branding initiatives. The South Carolina State Museum is seeking a highly motivated, creative, detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Graphic Design Assistant.

The SCSM is the largest museum in South Carolina and the only institution in the United States to feature four f loors of multi-disciplinary exhibition galleries, a full dome planetarium, a 4D theater and an observatory. Recently, the museum embarked on a multi-million-dollar renovation project making this an exciting opportunity to join our team and be a part of "reimagining" what the State Museum can be for the next generation of visitors, students, and scholars. The museum is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and detail-oriented Graphic Design Assistant to support the Communications & Marketing Department.

This part-time position reports to the Director of Communications & Marketing and the Graphic Design Manager and plays an essential role in producing engaging, high-quality graphic design materials ranging from exhibition labels and signage to digital graphics and branding elements. The ideal candidate is able to work independently in a fast-paced environment and is comfortable balancing hands-on production tasks with creative design work. Some evening or weekend hours may be required.

Responsibilities Include: Create digital and print graphics using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat). Assist in the design and production of signage, exhibition labels, posters, digital assets, and other visual materials. Prepare files for print production and ensure quality standards are met.

Print, mount, and install signage, exhibition labels, and other materials within the museum. Collaborate with museum staff to ensure clear communication and accurate execution of design needs. Interact professionally with museum guests and members of the public as needed.

Manage multiple deadlines and work efficiently in a time-sensitive environment. Perform additional duties as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements Proven experience creating commercial graphics, including digital media, signage, labels, and print materials.

Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat. Working knowledge of print production processes. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and comfortably use ladders for installation tasks. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with museum staff. Experience working with the general public is a plus.

Availability for occasional evening or weekend work.
