Interns work under the guidance of licensed counselors to develop practical skills, such as conducting individual and group counseling sessions, supporting students with academic or personal challenges, and learning to apply ethical and professional standards. This internship is often a requirement in counseling degree programs and provides valuable real-world experience to prepare students for licensure and full-time roles in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a student counseling intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Student Counseling Intern, you need foundational knowledge in counseling theories and techniques, typically gained through coursework in psychology or counseling and enrollment in a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with case management software, confidentiality protocols, and assessment tools is often required. Strong active listening, empathy, and interpersonal communication skills set exceptional interns apart. These competencies are crucial for building trust, supporting student wellbeing, and effectively collaborating within educational environments.

What types of supervision and mentorship can I expect during a student counseling internship?
