Description
Position Overview
The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San Josรฉ State University in downtown San Josรฉ, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center (PCUEC), and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
The Esports Student Assistant will assist with operational, supervision, and administrative oversight support duties for the Esports Facility located within the SRAC. Under direct supervision of the Esports and Gaming Supervisor.
Essential Functions and Tasks
  • Monitor and supervise activities within the Esports facility including practices, casual play and competitions to ensure safety of participants and spectators.
  • Understand, interpret and enforce Esports program policies and procedures, interpreting and enforcing rules, building policies and any applicable health and safety laws to ensure a successful program and safe facilities.
  • Assists with patron safety by preventing and responding to emergencies, enforcing all facility rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Assist Esports Student Supervisor with commentating streamed events.
  • Process of entry fees and relay any related documents to the Esports and Gaming supervisor
  • Attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings, training days, and workshops.
  • Assist Esports Student Supervisor with recording, and editing, and posting of content on social media alongside designing and delivering digital marketing media and graphic design materials.
  • Assist Esports and Gaming Manager with requested duties within the department.
  • Assist with of Esports and gaming events held within and outside of the Esports facility
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred. Online certifications will not be accepted. (May be obtained as part of training/onboarding.)
  • Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half-time* during the academic term.
    • *Half-time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half-time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of general facility operations and Esports policies and procedures.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, ability to manage conflicts.
  • Able to lift 45 pounds safely and stand for an extended period of time.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Basic knowledge of PC, Nintendo Switch, X, and other console operating systems.
  • Basic understanding of Twitch/X/Instagram along with other streaming and content related programs.
  • Basic knowledge in computer applications such as: Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, etc.), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Premiere Pro)
Work Requirements
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as indoor facility in a program-oriented environment.
    • The physical demands of this position are described below:
      • Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
      • Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
      • Lifting and Carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-75 lbs.
      • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
      • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, occasionally works evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
    • When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).
    • When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week.
  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.

This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.

Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from CSULearning@sjsu.edu
