Duties and ResponsibilitiesInstruction
  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.
  • Teach electrical theory and calculations, electrical blueprint and schematic reading, wiring methods, electrical installation, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, and repair.
  • Teach the application and interpretation of the current National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable electrical and building codes.
  • Provide hands‑on instruction in:
  • Residential branch circuits, feeders, services, panels, lighting, receptacles, appliances, and electrical equipment.
  • Commercial wiring systems and installation methods.
  • Raceway systems, conduit selection, layout, bending, installation, and support.
  • Motors, generators, and transformers.
  • Single‑phase and three‑phase electrical systems.
  • Industrial wiring and power distribution.
  • Motor starters, contactors, relays, overload protection, and motor‑control circuits.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.

Curriculum and Student Learning
  • Develop lesson plans, assignments, laboratory exercises, demonstrations, projects, assessments, and instructional materials aligned with approved course outcomes.
  • Maintain course syllabi and instructional materials in accordance with College requirements.
  • Establish measurable student learning outcomes and assess student achievement of those outcomes.
  • Use assessment results to improve instruction, curriculum, and laboratory activities.
  • Incorporate current industry practices, codes, equipment, technology, and employer expectations into instruction.
  • Support student preparation for applicable industry‑based certifications and licensure examinations.
  • Maintain appropriate alignment with NCCER Electrical curriculum and certification requirements when applicable.
  • Incorporate employability skills such as workplace safety, reliability, teamwork, communication, problem solving, professionalism, and construction mathematics into instruction.
Laboratory and Safety Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe, organized, clean, and industry‑appropriate electrical laboratory.
  • Enforce all College, OSHA, manufacturer, electrical, and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Ensure students properly use personal protective equipment and follow established electrical safety practices.
  • Conduct safety demonstrations and reinforce electrical hazard awareness, lockout/tagout principles, ladder safety, tool safety, and proper use of energized and de‑energized training equipment.
  • Inspect tools and training equipment before use and remove unsafe equipment from service.
  • Assist in maintaining inventories of tools, equipment, instructional supplies, electrical components, and consumable materials.
  • Identify equipment replacement and laboratory modernization needs.
  • Assist with equipment specifications, purchasing recommendations, installation, and maintenance.
  • Maintain training equipment in an operational condition appropriate for instruction.
Student Support
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, grades, assessment records, and other required student documentation.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours and provide academic assistance to students.
  • Advise students regarding program progression, certifications, career opportunities, apprenticeships, and employment.
  • Identify students experiencing academic or attendance difficulties and make appropriate interventions or referrals.
  • Promote student retention, progression, credential attainment, program completion, and employment.
  • Assist students in developing the technical and professional skills necessary for successful employment in the electrical industry.
Program and College Responsibilities
  • Participate in curriculum development and program review.
  • Participate in departmental, school, College, and faculty meetings and committees.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain technical competency in the electrical field.
  • Maintain relationships with electrical contractors, industrial employers, apprenticeship organizations, unions, workforce agencies, and other industry partners.
  • Participate in program advisory committee meetings and employer outreach.
  • Assist with student recruitment activities, open houses, career fairs, high‑school and dual‑enrollment outreach, and other program promotional activities.
  • Assist in developing internships, apprenticeships, work‑based learning, and employment opportunities for students.
  • Participate in activities necessary to maintain institutional, programmatic, and industry accreditation or certification requirements.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Construction Technology, or a closely related discipline and at least two years of directly related electrical occupational experience; OR
  • Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Industrial Electricity, Electrical Systems Technology, Electrical Construction, or a closely related discipline and at least three years of directly related electrical occupational experience; OR
  • Technical diploma, Certificate of Technical Studies, recognized apprenticeship certificate, or other relevant postsecondary electrical credential and at least four years of directly related electrical occupational experience; OR
  • At least five years of documented occupational experience as an electrician with demonstrated competencies, licenses, certifications, apprenticeship completion, or other credentials sufficient to establish competency to teach the assigned electrical courses.
Required Experience
  • Substantial hands‑on experience in at least two of the following three areas: residential, commercial, or industrial electrical work, with sufficient knowledge and experience to teach introductory material across all three.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the National Electrical Code and electrical safety practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical wiring and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and specifications.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate electrical installation and troubleshooting procedures in a laboratory/shop environment.
  • NCCER Craft Instructor Certification, or the ability to obtain the credential prior to providing NCCER‑regulated instruction.

Required Licenses or Certifications
  • NCCER Craft Instructor Certification, or the ability to obtain the credential prior to providing NCCER‑regulated instruction.
Preferred Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Construction Technology, or a closely related discipline and at least two years of directly related electrical occupational experience; OR
  • Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Industrial Electricity, Electrical Systems Technology, Electrical Construction, or a closely related discipline and at least three years of directly related electrical occupational experience; OR
  • Technical diploma, Certificate of Technical Studies, recognized apprenticeship certificate, or other relevant postsecondary electrical credential and at least four years of directly related electrical occupational experience; OR

Preferred Experience
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible professional electrical experience.
  • Experience that includes residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.
  • Completion of a registered electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Current or previously held Journeyman Electrician, Master Electrician, Electrical Contractor, or equivalent electrical credential from a recognized jurisdiction.
  • Current City of New Orleans Class D Journeyman Electrical License, Class A electrical credential, or comparable electrical license from another jurisdiction.
  • NCCER Electrical Levels 1–4 certification or equivalent recognized electrical craft credential.
  • NCCER Craft Instructor Certification.
  • OSHA 10- or OSHA 30‑hour Construction certification.
  • Experience with motors, motor controls, three‑phase power, transformers, industrial electrical distribution, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with programmable or electronic control systems, digital logic, solid‑state devices, or industrial automation.
  • Previous teaching, apprenticeship training, workforce training, supervisory, foreman, or employee‑training experience.
