Job description

Position Title: Associate Principal - Elementary School

Location: South Dover Elementary School

Terms of Employment: 12-Month Employee

Start Date:  To be determined

Reports To: Building Principal

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the Board of Education Administrative Salary Schedule

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board Policy and Delaware Department of Education administrative evaluation guidelines (DPAS II for Administrators).

Job Summary

The Elementary Associate Principal serves as an instructional and administrative leader, assisting the Building Principal in maintaining a supportive, high-achieving, and inclusive school culture. The successful candidate will foster a culture of academic growth, equity, and continuous improvement aligned with the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) and the Capital School District mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

1. Mission, Vision, and Core Values (PSEL 1)

  • Assists in leading, articulating, and maintaining a shared vision of high expectations for student learning, growth, and wellbeing.
  • Promotes a school climate centered on equity, integrity, and social justice.

2. Ethics and Professional Norms (PSEL 2)

  • Models ethical and professional behavior, treating all members of the school community with dignity, fairness, and respect.
  • Ensures transparent communication, operational compliance, and confidentiality.

3. Equity and Cultural Responsiveness (PSEL 3)

  • Advocates for equitable access to rigorous coursework, specialized services, and resources for all students.
  • Implements culturally responsive restorative practices and positive behavior support systems (PBS/MTSS).

4. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (PSEL 4)

  • Conducts teacher evaluations and offers timely, actionable feedback to drive instruction.
  • Facilitates Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to analyze assessment data, adjust instruction, and establish targeted student interventions.

5. Community of Care and Support for Students (PSEL 5)

  • Oversees student attendance, climate initiatives, and discipline using restorative justice practices.
  • Collaborates with counselors, behavioral health specialists, and support staff to address student socio-emotional needs.

6. Professional Capacity of School Personnel (PSEL 6 & 7)

  • Supports high-quality, job-embedded professional development aligned with school and district goals.
  • Mentors new teachers and fosters a collaborative professional learning community.

7. Meaningful Engagement of Families and Community (PSEL 8)

  • Builds partnerships with families, community groups, and business partners to enrich student learning.
  • Facilitates school events, PTA meetings, and family engagement initiatives.

8. Operations and Management (PSEL 9 & 10)

  • Assists with daily operations, scheduling, facility safety, transportation, and crisis response plans.
  • Supervises school-wide events, student arrival/dismissal, cafeteria, and extracurricular activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Master's degree in Educational Leadership or School Administration from an accredited institution.
  • Certification: Hold or be eligible for Delaware Department of Education certification as an Assistant Principal/Principal (14 Del. C. 1591).
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of successful classroom teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level. Demonstrated administrative or leadership experience
  • Skills: Strong understanding of elementary literacy/math instruction, data-informed practice, restorative discipline, and MTSS framework.

Standard Requirements

  • Favorable State of Delaware Criminal Background Check and Child Protection Registry Check.
  • Mandatory Mantoux Tuberculin (TB) Test and Physical examination.
  • Direct Deposit of paycheck is mandatory.
