Part-Time Reading Interventionist2026 2027 School Year
Position PurposeUnder the general supervision of the building principal and division administration, the Part-Time Reading Interventionist provides targeted, evidence-based reading instruction to students identified as struggling readers. The interventionist delivers small-group and individual intervention sessions designed to accelerate student literacy growth, collaborates with classroom teachers and specialists, and uses data to drive instructional decisions.
Essential FunctionsReading Instruction & Intervention- Delivers structured, systematic, and explicit reading intervention aligned with the Science of Reading to students in grades K 5 (or applicable grade band)
- Provides small-group and individual instruction targeting phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
- Implements research-based, division-approved intervention programs with fidelity
- Adapts instruction based on ongoing student data and individual learning needs
- Supports the development of foundational literacy skills for students performing below grade level
Assessment & Data Use- Analyzes assessment data to identify students in need of intervention and to monitor progress toward literacy goals
- Maintains accurate and timely records of student performance and intervention delivery
- Uses progress monitoring data to adjust instructional intensity, grouping, and strategies
Collaboration & Communication- Partners with classroom teachers to align intervention with core instruction and to share student progress
- Participates in data team meetings and student support team meetings
- Communicates regularly with teachers, administrators, and families regarding student progress and strategies for support
Professional Responsibilities- Maintains confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA and division procedures
- Participates in professional development related to reading instruction, intervention, and literacy best practices
- Stays current on evidence-based literacy research and instructional strategies
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or division administration
Working ConditionsWork is performed in a standard school environment with regular interaction with students, classroom teachers, and school staff. The position may involve moving between classrooms, working in small-group settings, and managing student behavior. Schedule is determined by student intervention needs and may vary by school.
Qualifications ProfileCertification/License- Valid Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) license in Elementary Education, Reading Specialist, or a related area preferred
- LETRS, or similar structured literacy certification/training a plus
Education- Bachelor's degree in Education, Reading, or a related field required
- Master's degree, preferred
Experience- Prior successful experience providing reading intervention or literacy instruction to K 5 students preferred
- Experience with progress monitoring and data-driven instruction
- Familiarity with structured literacy approaches and Science of Reading research base
- Experience administering and interpreting diagnostic reading assessments
Other Requirements- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
- Valid driver's license or ability to provide reliable transportation
