Field Engineer – Structured Cabling (Data Center Infrastructure)

Location: New Albany, OH (On-Site)

Duration: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire

Pay Rate: $35–$42/hr

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Field Engineer I – Structured Cabling to support large-scale data center infrastructure projects in the New Albany, Ohio market. This role is ideal for a technical professional with experience in structured cabling, fiber optics, material procurement, and data center environments who wants to grow into a leadership-focused engineering position.

As a Field Engineer, you'll serve as the technical bridge between project management, field operations, vendors, and customers. You'll play a critical role in ensuring projects are properly designed, materialized, installed, tested, and documented while maintaining the highest standards of quality and operational excellence.

Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Engineering & Project Support
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, cable schedules, specifications, BOMs (Bills of Material), and project documentation.
  • Develop shop drawings, submittals, and technical project documentation.
  • Support project teams throughout the project lifecycle from pre-construction planning through project closeout.
  • Perform site walks and field assessments to evaluate existing conditions, infrastructure requirements, and installation challenges.
  • Identify constructability concerns and provide recommendations for improved project execution.
Structured Cabling & Fiber Expertise
  • Provide technical guidance for fiber optic and low-voltage infrastructure deployments.
  • Apply knowledge of fiber optic cable construction, fiber types, pathways, and approved alternative materials.
  • Ensure installations comply with customer specifications, industry standards, and quality requirements.
  • Conduct system testing, validation, troubleshooting, and quality inspections.
  • Manage punch lists and support successful project turnover.
Material Management & Procurement
  • Coordinate material requirements for large-scale data center projects.
  • Review and validate BOMs for completeness and accuracy.
  • Support procurement efforts, including hyperscale data center material requirements and approval processes.
  • Collaborate with vendors, subcontractors, and project stakeholders to ensure materials arrive on time and align with project specifications.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Serve as a technical resource for field teams, project managers, and superintendents.
  • Partner with estimating teams to develop scopes of work, labor projections, and technical narratives.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors during site walks, bid reviews, and pre-construction planning.
  • Support training initiatives and help establish best practices for installation quality and project execution.
  • Act as a liaison between field operations, customers, general contractors, and internal project teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience working in data center environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret cable schedules, construction drawings, and Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Strong understanding of structured cabling systems and low-voltage infrastructure.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fiber optic cable construction, fiber types, pathways, and approved alternative materials.
  • Experience supporting material procurement and project material management.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with multiple project stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting hyperscale data center projects.
