Structured Cabling Technician
Reports To:
Physical Security Manager

Location: Oklahoma City, OK


Role Overview

The Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for the installation, termination, testing, and maintenance of low-voltage structured cabling systems, including Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic. This role supports commercial and education environments and ensures projects are completed on schedule, within scope, and to high quality and safety standards. The technician may also assist with cabling for physical security systems under the guidance of specialized staff.


Key Responsibilities
  • Install, terminate, label, and test structured cabling (Cat6, Cat6A, fiber optic) in various environments, including office, retail, and light industrial spaces
  • Install cable support infrastructure such as J-hooks, cable trays, and ladder racks, ensuring organized and standards-compliant cabling pathways
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, and project scopes to determine installation requirements and cable routing
  • Test, troubleshoot, and certify cable installations using appropriate tools to ensure proper performance and signal quality
  • Assist with cabling for physical security devices such as access control systems and surveillance cameras, coordinating with specialized security staff
  • Provide detailed as-built documentation, including cable routes, labeling, and test results, and assist with project handoff
Performance Expectations
  • Document all project activities, daily notes, and communications in company systems (e.g., ConnectWise and IT Glue) in real time
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with project managers, team members, and customers
  • Accurately record time daily and submit weekly timesheets in compliance with company policy
  • Deliver clean, organized, and high-quality cabling installations
  • Identify and escalate project risks, delays, or scope changes proactively
  • Demonstrate initiative in troubleshooting and resolving on-site challenges
Technical Skills & Proficiencies
  • Strong understanding of structured cabling best practices and BICSI standards for copper and fiber installations
  • Proficiency with cable termination tools (punch-down tools, crimpers) and fiber optic splicing/termination
  • Hands-on experience with Cat6/Cat6A and fiber optic systems, including testing and certification
  • Ability to read construction drawings, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules
  • Familiarity with access control and CCTV cabling infrastructure is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
  • Additional software as assigned
Preferred Experience
  • 3–5+ years of low-voltage or structured cabling experience strongly preferred
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work may involve ladders, lifts, ceilings, and confined spaces
  • Ability to use hands to handle and control equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively (talk and hear)
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret written documents
  • Ability to lift and move objects such as cable reels, ladders, or hardware weighing up to approximately 50 pounds as needed, with or without reasonable accommodations
