Position Summary
The Structural Technician I supports basic structural, mechanical, labor, and production support activities under direct supervision. This entry-level position assists experienced structural personnel with material handling, tool support, work area setup, cleanup, basic fabrication support, and safe jobsite execution while learning structural trade practices and project requirements.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
โ€ข Assist with basic structural, fabrication, removal, installation, grinding, fitting, material handling, and production support tasks under direct supervision.
โ€ข Carry, load, unload, stage, sort, and organize tools, materials, consumables, equipment, and work area supplies.
โ€ข Follow supervisor direction, work instructions, safety requirements, and site access rules.
โ€ข Assist with work area setup, cleanup, firewatch support, housekeeping, and equipment control as directed.
โ€ข Use basic hand tools, power tools, and material handling equipment safely and correctly when authorized.
โ€ข Report unsafe conditions, damaged tools, missing materials, or work concerns to the Lead or Foreman.
โ€ข Learn basic structural terminology, material types, jobsite expectations, and safe work practices.
โ€ข Weld together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding producers, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment
โ€ข Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or think scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
โ€ข Weld completion in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions
โ€ข Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding
โ€ข Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal
โ€ข Clean or degrease weld joint or work piece, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes
โ€ข Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes according to metals to be joined or as instructed
โ€ข Preform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes
โ€ข Burn, wash, edge prepping using hand and automated equipment
โ€ข Flux cored inner shield and dual shield welding along with oxy-acetylene torching, air-arc, weld-wire gas, stick and pipe flange
โ€ข Construct or repair metal products by joining parts either manual (using a variety of welding methods including electric arc, MIG and TIG welding or oxy-acetylene welding) or by machine
โ€ข Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons reports and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work
โ€ข Preform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes
โ€ข Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
โ€ข Ability to follow direction and work safely as part of a structural crew.
โ€ข Basic understanding of hand tools, power tools, material handling, and industrial work practices.
โ€ข Ability to learn basic structural trade methods, work sequencing, and jobsite requirements.
โ€ข Ability to communicate clearly with Leads, Foremen, and crew members.
โ€ข Ability to maintain good housekeeping and protect tools, materials, and equipment.
โ€ข SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding)
โ€ข Knowledge of welding techniques (oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, and TIG), tools and equipment
Training, Security, Education & Physical Requirements
โ€ข High school diploma or GED preferred.
โ€ข Prior construction, shipyard, industrial, mechanical, welding, or structural experience preferred but not required.
โ€ข Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory, hearing, eye, hand, and fall protection when required.
โ€ข Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, aboard vessels, and in active industrial environments.
โ€ข Ability to lift, carry, climb, bend, kneel, stand, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
โ€ข Ability to work overtime, weekends, nights, or shift work as required by project needs.
โ€ข Applicable safety, access, trade, or customer-required credentials must be obtained and maintained when required for assigned work.
