General Job Description for: Experienced Structural Steel Fabrication Shop Quality Control (QC) Technician

This is skilled quality control work involving the inspection, verification, and documentation of structural steel fabrication to ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable codes, and customer requirements. The Structural Steel Fabrication Shop QC Technician is responsible for inspecting fabricated steel components throughout the production process, identifying non-conforming work, maintaining quality records, and working closely with shop personnel to ensure the highest level of workmanship. Work is performed under the direction of the Shop Manager and is subject to review for quality, accuracy, and adherence to company safety standards.

Job Duties and Tasks for: Experienced Structural Steel Fabrication Shop Quality Control (QC) Technician
  • Perform inspections of structural steel fabrication throughout all stages of production.
  • Verify fabricated components meet project drawings, specifications, and applicable industry standards.
  • Read and interpret structural drawings, fabrication details, blueprints, and weld symbols.
  • Inspect fit-up, dimensions, hole locations, weld preparations, and completed assemblies.
  • Conduct visual weld inspections and identify defects or non-conforming work.
  • Verify material identification, traceability, and proper documentation.
  • Maintain quality control records, inspection reports, and project documentation.
  • Coordinate with shop personnel to resolve quality issues and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Communicate with project managers, supervisors, customers, and third-party inspectors as needed.
  • Assist with customer inspections and audits.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Skills Needed for: Experienced Structural Steel Fabrication Shop Quality Control (QC) Technician
  • Thorough knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of welding procedures, weld symbols, and visual weld inspection techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, blueprints, fabrication details, and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of dimensional tolerances and measurement techniques.
  • Proficiency using measuring equipment including tape measures, calipers, squares, and other inspection tools.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in structural steel fabrication quality control or inspection preferred.
  • Experience inspecting structural steel fabrication, welding, and fabricated assemblies.
  • Familiarity with AWS welding standards and structural steel fabrication practices preferred.
  • Experience with AISC fabrication standards is a plus.
  • Ability to accurately read fabrication drawings and project specifications.
  • Strong computer skills for documentation and reporting preferred.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening requirements.
