Job description

Title : Design Engineer, Structural

Infrastructure Solutions Division

Function : Design Engineering


Job summary:

The Structural Engineer (SE) will be responsible for the structural design of customized AC and DC Power Modules, IT Modules and

Data Centers for three core market segments; IT, Telecom and Industrial. This position will support customer requirements and

business development activities. The SE will provide general Structural designs for Data Centers, Telecommunications Central

Offices, Switching Centers, Video Hub Offices, etc. and will work directly with the module manufacturing facility to develop a

detailed workshop drawing package. The SE will complete the design based on local and international building codes including

seismic, thermal and structural requirements, etc. The SE will coordinate structural design with architectural, electrical, thermal,

mechanical and controls engineers requirements. The SE will also participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Testing with a focus on general design concepts.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Serve as Lead Structural Engineer (SE) to provide conceptual and detailed design of building structure in pre-sales stage and post sales stages
  • Work with local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Detailed design of mechanical parts โ€“ lifting points, anchoring points, flashings, gutters, etc.
  • Create designs which meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary requirements.
  • Provide a detailed Schematic Design(SD), Detail Design(DD) and Construction Drawing(CD) narrative for structural design aspects of the solution
  • Review and approve structural product submittals.
  • Provide Static and Dynamic (blast impact) calculations
  • Coordinate with Mechanical Engineer on thermal transfer calculations (fire ratings and thermal bridges).
  • Detailed design of foundation requirements
  • Manage and coordinate contracted engineering companies in regards to civil work calculations, mechanical and structural calculations and creation of factory documentation.
  • Material specification โ€“ structural and finish
  • Work with business units, Business Partners and preferred vendors to specify the appropriate material specifications and sizes for the fabrication process to succeed.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during construction phases.
  • Welding procedure and inspection specification
  • Provide Nondestructive examination (NDE) methods specification
  • Provide Surface preparation and painting specification
  • Develop and provide Dimensional test procedure
  • Develop and provide structural load test procedure and calculation
  • Coordination between architectural and civil work design
  • Provide technical project coordination with customers and suppliers
  • Quality control during execution
  • Provide support for all on site module repairs (damaged paint, door malfunction etc.)
  • Work with fabrication teams to properly check and validate construction process, welding specifications and weld inspection points during construction of the module.
  • Travel to fabricators facility for design validation and review their workmanship as well as provide engineering evaluations and workmanship audits as needed.
  • May communicate with the customer in order to design the best possible solution for his needs.
  • Offer creative, out of the box solutions to the customer.


Job qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or acceptable experience
  • Professional engineering (PE) License โ€“ optional
  • Minimum 4 years of mechanical/structural engineering experience
  • Working knowledge in AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit
  • Proven experience with Microsoft Office Applications
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and equipment specifications
  • Knowledge and understanding of local and national building codes
  • Must be able to interpret customer specification requirements
  • Must have the ability to research new designs, technologies and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities
  • Ability to think outside the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability or maintainability.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Detail oriented.
