What is structural engineering?

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing, analyzing, and ensuring the safety and stability of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Structural engineers work to make sure that structures can withstand the loads and forces they encounter, such as gravity, wind, earthquakes, and human use. Their work involves selecting appropriate materials, creating blueprints, and sometimes inspecting construction sites to ensure compliance with design specifications. Structural engineering plays a vital role in the safety and durability of the built environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (such as a PE license). Proficiency in structural analysis software (like SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD) and familiarity with building codes are essential technical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients. These skills ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of structures while facilitating teamwork and compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges structural engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams on multidisciplinary projects. One common challenge is aligning structural requirements with architectural aesthetics and project budgets without compromising safety or functionality. Effective communication and early involvement in the design process are key to resolving conflicts and ensuring structural integrity. Additionally, adapting to changing project scopes and coordinating with multiple stakeholders can require strong project management and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering vs Civil Engineering?

AspectStructural EngineeringCivil Engineering
CredentialsRequires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE license often preferredRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing structural systems for buildings, bridges, and towersEncompasses a broader range of infrastructure projects including roads, water systems, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsUsed across construction, transportation, urban development, and environmental sectors

Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering focused on designing and analyzing structures to ensure safety and stability. Civil engineering covers a broader scope of infrastructure projects. While structural engineers concentrate on the integrity of individual structures, civil engineers handle a wide range of infrastructure systems. Both roles often require similar credentials and work environments, but their project focus and scope differ significantly.

Job description

Structural Engineering Manager

Location: Greenville, SC
Company: Bridge Brothers

About Bridge Brothers

Bridge Brothers is a leading manufacturer specializing in the design, engineering, fabrication, and construction of custom steel bridges. We serve municipalities, national parks, energy companies, private developers, and other specialized clients nationwide.

Our work is complex, custom, and highly visible. We pride ourselves on engineering rigor, craftsmanship, and execution excellence. When you join Bridge Brothers, you’re not just joining a company—you’re helping design and deliver infrastructure that connects communities and stands the test of time.

Position Summary

Bridge Brothers is seeking a Structural Engineering Manager to lead the technical execution, quality, and development of our engineering department.

This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for structural steel bridge design, engineering quality control, checking procedures, and cross-functional coordination between engineering, detailing, fabrication, and construction teams.

The ideal candidate is a strong technical engineer who enjoys both design work and mentorship. This individual will remain actively involved in structural design and engineering execution while also serving as a key technical leader responsible for improving engineering quality, accountability, and team development.

We are seeking someone who can raise the standard of engineering output while helping build stronger processes, communication, and technical consistency across the organization.

Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering Leadership, Design amp; Technical Oversight
  • Lead structural design efforts across custom steel bridge projects from concept through fabrication support
  • Perform structural analysis, calculations, and design development for steel bridge systems and related structures
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, design packages, and technical deliverables
  • Serve as the senior technical resource for complex engineering challenges and design decisions
  • Establish and maintain engineering quality standards, checking procedures, and internal best practices
  • Apply and interpret applicable codes and standards including AASHTO, AISC, ASCE, ACI, DOT, and IBC requirements
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are accurate, constructible, and aligned with fabrication and field execution
  • Remain hands-on in engineering execution rather than functioning solely in a managerial capacity

Team Leadership amp; Mentorship
  • Mentor and develop engineers, designers, and detailers across the organization
  • Provide technical guidance, design reviews, and day-to-day support to engineering team members
  • Help establish structure, accountability, and consistency within engineering workflows and deliverables
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and development of engineering talent
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance engineering culture focused on continuous improvement

Cross-Functional Coordination amp; Project Execution
  • Coordinate closely with detailing, fabrication, and construction teams to ensure alignment between design intent and production execution
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and fabrication packages
  • Support fabrication and field teams with technical problem solving and engineering clarification as needed
  • Work alongside leadership to improve engineering systems, workflows, documentation, and communication across departments
  • Support estimating and pre-construction efforts with technical input and design guidance
  • Help manage engineering priorities, schedules, and deliverables across multiple concurrent projects

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or related Engineering discipline required
  • 7+ years of structural engineering experience within bridges, structural steel, industrial, manufacturing, energy, or other complex steel systems
  • Strong background in structural steel design and engineering fundamentals
  • Experience performing and reviewing structural engineering design work
  • Prior mentorship, team leadership, or engineering management experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with AASHTO and/or structural steel building and industrial codes including AISC, ASCE, and IBC
  • Experience coordinating with fabrication, detailing, and construction teams
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and review structural and fabrication drawings
  • Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred

What We’re Looking For
  • A technical leader who enjoys both engineering design and mentoring others
  • Someone who can raise the quality, consistency, and accountability of engineering output
  • An engineer who understands the realities of fabrication and construction — not just calculations
  • A self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
  • Someone excited by autonomy, ownership, and the opportunity to help shape the future of a growing engineering organization

Work Environment amp; Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based work environment in Greenville, SC
  • Occasional interaction with fabrication teams and shop environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs if visiting fabrication facilities
  • PPE provided if entering fabrication or active production areas

Role Details
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, full-time
  • Employment Type: Exempt
  • Travel: Minimal
  • Benefits: Eligible after 60 days (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, PTO, paid holidays)
