Job Summary:

Lerch Bates is seeking a Senior Envelope Rehabilitation Consultant to lead complex structural evaluation, rehabilitation, and repair projects for existing buildings. This role serves as a technical authority responsible for assessing structural deficiencies, developing repair and rehabilitation strategies, and overseeing the execution of structural restoration projects from concept through completion.

In this role, you will act as an Engineer of Record, providing final technical decisions and signing/sealing structural repair documents and reports. You will manage multidisciplinary project teams, oversee design development, and ensure structural rehabilitation solutions meet engineering standards, code requirements, and client objectives.

This position is ideal for a senior-level structural engineer with deep experience in forensic engineering, structural condition assessment, and building rehabilitation who is ready to lead both projects and people while serving as a trusted advisor to clients.

What You’ll Do:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.

Structural Evaluation & Forensic Assessment

  • Lead structural condition assessments of existing buildings, including commercial, institutional, and complex facilities
  • Investigate structural deficiencies such as deterioration, cracking, corrosion, settlement, and system failures
  • Evaluate load paths, structural performance, and building stability concerns
  • Review existing construction documents and field conditions to identify structural risks and repair needs

Rehabilitation Design & Engineering

  • Develop structural rehabilitation and repair strategies for existing building systems
  • Perform and oversee structural calculations for repair, retrofit, and code upgrade conditions
  • Prepare and seal structural repair drawings, reports, and engineering deliverables as the Engineer of Record
  • Conduct peer review of structural reports and design documents prepared by internal staff

Project Leadership & Oversight

  • Assume full responsibility for project scope, schedule, budget, design quality, and execution
  • Manage multidisciplinary teams including engineers, designers, and technicians
  • Oversee construction administration for structural repair and rehabilitation projects
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate construction progress and ensure compliance with design intent

Client Leadership & Communication

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor and primary client contact for structural rehabilitation projects
  • Lead client meetings to present findings, repair strategies, and engineering recommendations
  • Collaborate with business development teams on proposals, scopes, and project planning
  • Build long-term client relationships and support growth of existing accounts

Mentorship & Technical Development

  • Lead and mentor up to three direct reports, including engineers and technical staff
  • Provide technical direction, performance feedback, and professional development support
  • Establish best practices for structural evaluation and rehabilitation methodologies

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or related discipline)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in structural engineering, with a focus on forensics, rehabilitation, or existing buildings
  • Proven experience acting as Engineer of Record on structural repair or retrofit projects
  • Strong expertise in structural systems behavior, building failures, and rehabilitation design
  • Experience with structural condition assessments, investigations, and repair documentation
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, including report preparation and client presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage complex engineering projects
  • Strong knowledge of building codes and structural rehabilitation practices
  • Experience with project budgeting, scope development, and client management preferred
  • Proficiency in structural analysis/design software (e.g., RISA, ADAPT, or similar) preferred
  • Master’s degree or specialized certifications in structural/forensic engineering preferred

Working Environment:

This role involves both physical and mental demands and may be performed in various settings, including offices, construction sites, and confined spaces like elevator pits. Tasks often require frequent movement in multiple directions. Lerch Bates will provide reasonable accommodations upon request through Human Resources.

Physical Demands:

The employee must be able to work at extreme heights using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and in various weather conditions (e.g., extreme heat, cold, and wet).

The work environment varies greatly from a general office environment, construction sites and entry into tight spaces which requires the ability to tolerate constant up, down, forward and reversing motions while performing work
