What is a structural engineering research?

A Structural Engineering Research job involves studying, analyzing, and developing new methods, materials, and technologies to improve the strength, durability, and safety of structures. Researchers in this field work on theoretical and experimental projects, often collaborating with engineers, universities, and industry partners. They may focus on areas such as structural mechanics, earthquake engineering, material behavior, and sustainability. The role typically involves conducting simulations, laboratory testing, and publishing findings in technical journals. This research helps advance building codes, construction techniques, and innovative structural solutions.

What types of projects and day-to-day tasks are common in structural engineering research roles?

Professionals in Structural Engineering Research often work on projects such as developing new building materials, assessing the structural integrity of innovative designs, or creating computational models to predict structural behavior under various conditions. Daily tasks may include conducting laboratory experiments, performing data analysis, collaborating with academic or industry partners, and preparing technical reports or research papers. Researchers often work within multidisciplinary teams, interfacing with architects, construction professionals, and other engineers to solve complex problems. This role offers a dynamic mix of hands-on experimentation, analytical work, and frequent knowledge sharing, making it ideal for those who enjoy both technical rigor and creative problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in structural engineering research?

To thrive in Structural Engineering Research, you need advanced knowledge of structural analysis, materials science, and engineering principles, typically supported by a master’s or doctoral degree in civil or structural engineering. Familiarity with specialized software such as MATLAB, ANSYS, or SAP2000, as well as experience with laboratory testing and analytical tools, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly are highly valued in this field. These qualifications are essential for conducting innovative research and developing safe, effective solutions to structural engineering challenges.

Job description

The mission at Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk) is to manage hazards and risks through high-value services, products, and research. The BakerRisk Protective Structures Section completes this mission through the evaluation and design of structures exposed to extreme loading conditions such as blast, thermal, and high-velocity impacts. We design buildings to protect people in potentially hazardous working environments, design manufacturing bays to contain the effects of accidental explosions, and collaborate with government agencies to design spaces to protect occupants from potential hostile threats. Our design and evaluation approaches continue to be validated and expanded through research, testing, and the investigation of catastrophic events such as explosions, fires, and toxic material releases. BakerRisk operates two test facilities, the Wilfred E. Baker Test Facility and Box Canyon Test Facility, where both scale and full-scale testing of building structures can be completed. BakerRisk has a collaborative work environment where coordination with other technical disciplines at BakerRisk, Process Safety and Blast Effects, is encouraged to develop a solution to manage hazards and risks.

An immediate full-time position is available for a Senior Blast Resistant Structural Engineer in our San Antonio or Houston office. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership on complex structural engineering projects involving blast-resistant design, protective structures, explosive safety applications, forensic investigations, structural testing, and advanced numerical analysis. The position offers opportunities to work on projects of significance for industrial, government, defense, and commercial clients while contributing to the growth and advancement of BakerRisk's technical capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Successful candidates require a BS in Civil/Structural Engineering (MS preferred).
  • Education must include the analysis and design of structures (steel, concrete, and masonry) using simplified and advanced methods.
  • Candidate should also be experienced (10 years) in one or more of the following areas: structural design of buildings, structural dynamics due to impulsive loads, structural evaluation of existing buildings, structural forensic engineering, structural analysis software development, structural testing, and/or finite element analysis.
  • Candidates must be able to independently execute routine and complex structural engineering projects with minimal supervision.
  • The Senior Engineer is expected to exercise independent engineering judgment in evaluating technical challenges and developing practical, innovative engineering solutions.
  • The Senior Engineer is responsible for managing projects that require scope development, resource planning, oversight of budgets and schedules, quality control, and client communication.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting BakerRisk’s capabilities to clients and independently developing proposals for routine scopes of work with minimal managerial oversight.
  • The candidate will also support the development of large and/or complex proposals with the senior engineering and management team.
  • The successful candidate will work with junior engineers and provide guidance on assigned work tasks.
  • The Senior Engineer will be responsible for assigning and outlining work for junior engineers.
  • Typical projects will require nonlinear blast response analysis, detailed structural design and design concept development, preparation of design specifications, research/accident investigation support, structural drawing development and review, and review of numerical calculations.

Education

  • Master’s Degree or above with a focus in structural engineering. A Bachelor’s degree may be acceptable with prior work experience as a structural engineer. Work ethic and office professionalism consistent with BakerRisk's high technical standards is a must.
  • The successful candidate will hold a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Civil or Structural Engineering.

Required Skills

  • Previous background in structural engineering, including experience with developing Structural Drawing packages (plans, elevations, details)
  • Willingness to travel 25%-30% of the time.
  • Must possess excellent communication and writing skills.

Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with commercial structural analysis software such as SAP 2000
  • Familiarity with commercial finite element software such as LS DYNA
  • Familiarity with Revit
