A Structural Engineering Intern assists professional engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. Their tasks often include drafting plans, performing calculations, preparing reports, and helping ensure projects comply with safety and building codes. Interns may also visit construction sites, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and use engineering software to support design work. The goal of the internship is to gain hands-on experience and understand the practical aspects of structural engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineering intern?

To thrive as a Structural Engineering Intern, you need a foundational understanding of structural analysis, engineering principles, and coursework toward a degree in civil or structural engineering. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, as well as knowledge of building codes, is typically required. Full-time, Temporary, Internship

Job description

Description

The Schaefer internship and co-op program provides opportunities for students to apply classroom methodology to hands-on modeling and design. The student's Schaefer advisor, mentor and the assigned project team coordinate to ensure the learning experience is relevant and challenging. Successful internships and co-op rotations may lead to full-time employment, as evidenced by our present staff of dedicated and talented structural engineers and modelers, many of whom were students here themselves. The internship position is full-time (40 hours/week) for approximately 3 months during the Summer semester of 2027.

Scope of Work
  • Develop an understanding of load path and simple statics within basic structures.
  • Work to create structural drawings from engineering designs to markups.
  • Work closely with an assigned mentor who provides hands on support and guidance while working through real projects.
  • Learn engineering software such as Revit and RAM Structural Systems for application on a variety of challenging projects.
  • Participate in site visits and in-house training sessions with other engineers.
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in Civil or Architectural Engineering program at an ABET accredited college.
  • Preferred coursework covering topics such as structural analysis, loads and systems or equivalent, concrete design, and structural steel design.
  • Experience in Revit is a plus.
Working conditions and physical requirements

This work is typically done within an office environment with occasional field work at project + construction sites. When field assignments are required, the working conditions + physical requirements for field staff apply.

  • Normal core working hours will be 9 am - 4 pm but may vary depending on project demands.
  • Overtime work may be required based on work deadlines.
  • Ability to access + navigate construction sites; may require ability to climb + descend ladders or crawl through openings.
  • Some travel may be required for this position: conducting site visits, working out of area, out of state or across the state as driven by project need.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Schaefer is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, age, religion, national origin, disability status, genetic information, veteran status, or other legally protected status.
