How much do structural engineering faculty jobs pay per year?
What is a structural engineering faculty?
A Structural Engineering Faculty job involves teaching, research, and service in the field of structural engineering at a university or college. Faculty members develop and deliver courses on topics such as structural analysis, design, and materials while also conducting research to advance knowledge in the field. They mentor students, supervise graduate research, and contribute to academic and professional communities through publications and conferences. Additionally, they may engage in service activities such as curriculum development, committee work, and outreach to industry and professional organizations.
What are the typical teaching and research responsibilities for structural engineering faculty?
Structural Engineering Faculty generally split their time between teaching courses, conducting research, and mentoring students. A typical week might include developing course materials, lecturing, guiding students through projects, supervising graduate research, and publishing scholarly work. Faculty often collaborate with industry partners, participate in departmental committees, and advise student organizations related to engineering. The balance between teaching and research can vary depending on the institution, with some roles emphasizing innovative research and others focusing more on undergraduate teaching and curriculum development. This variety provides faculty with opportunities for both personal growth and professional advancement within academia.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the structural engineering faculty position, and why are they important?
To thrive as Structural Engineering Faculty, you typically need an advanced degree in civil or structural engineering, a record of research or industry experience, and a strong understanding of structural analysis and design principles. Experience with structural design software such as SAP2000, ETABS, and AutoCAD, as well as professional engineering licensure (e.g., PE), are often expected. Exceptional communication, mentorship abilities, and organizational skills stand out in this academic role. These skills ensure you can effectively educate students, conduct impactful research, and contribute to the academic and professional engineering community.

Job description
The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics (MPBP) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
MPBP is one of the nation's premier physiology and biophysics departments and is consistently ranked among the top departments in NIH funding. We seek exceptional scientists pursuing innovative, mechanistic, and interdisciplinary research that advances fundamental physiology and human disease.
Position 1
Physiology
We seek investigators pursuing innovative research that advances fundamental understanding of physiological processes across molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal scales. Successful candidates will integrate physiology with biophysical, structural, computational, or quantitative approaches to uncover mechanisms of health and disease. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Cellular and organellar physiology
- Membrane physiology and biophysics
- RNA biology and translation control
- Extracellular matrix biology and mechanobiology
- Structural biology and structural proteomics
- Quantitative, computational, and systems physiology
- Genome engineering, precision medicine, and therapeutic development
Position 2
Cardiovascular Physiology (Joint Recruitment with the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center)
This position is jointly supported by MPBP and the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) to strengthen UVA's internationally recognized programs in cardiovascular biology. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Cardiovascular Biology and Disease Mechanisms
- Vascular Biology and Microcirculation
- Ion Channels and Membrane Physiology
- ECM Biology and Mechanobiology
- Translational Cardiovascular Therapeutics
Applicants pursuing mechanistic research with relevance to cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolism, inflammation, or aging are encouraged to apply.
Environment
Successful candidates will establish internationally recognized, externally funded research programs, contribute to graduate and medical education, and participate in MPBP's highly collaborative scientific community.
The department provides an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research spanning physiology, biophysics, structural biology, membrane biology, cell biology, computational biology, and medicine. Faculty benefit from state-of-the-art institutional infrastructure, including:
- Organelle biology
- Membrane biology
- Genome engineering and gene editing
- Small Animal Imaging Facility
- Cryo-electron microscopy
