What is a structural engineer?

Structural engineers are specialized professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. They work to make sure these structures can withstand various forces, such as gravity, wind, and earthquakes, while remaining safe and functional. Structural engineers use mathematics, physics, and material science to select appropriate construction materials and methods. Their expertise is essential in the planning and construction phases, as well as in inspecting existing structures for safety and compliance.

What are some common challenges structural engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Structural Engineers often collaborate with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers to deliver integrated building designs. One common challenge is balancing aesthetic or functional requirements from architects with structural safety and code compliance. Effective communication and coordination are essential to resolve conflicts, manage project timelines, and ensure that structural solutions align with the broader vision of the project. Structural Engineers should be proactive in attending coordination meetings and using collaborative design tools to streamline teamwork.

What do structural engineers do?

Structural engineering is a branch of civil engineering that involves the design, construction, and repair of many different types of structures. The job of a structural engineer is to act as a consultant to architects and contractors throughout the construction project, offering expert advice on technical problems. Structural engineers are typically contracted on projects involving sports arenas, bridges, large buildings, or any other weight-bearing structure. On a day-to-day basis, a structural engineer may assist the head architect with initial layout and design of a structure, including plans for maintenance or overall remodels. They calculate loads, such as wind, snow, and earthquake forces, to determine which structural system is safest. Some structural engineers specialize in demolition and are responsible for ensuring projects are carried out safely and without damage to surrounding structures. Others specialize in oil drilling machinery, aircraft and shipbuilding vehicle design, or temporary structure builds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of building projects while facilitating collaboration with architects, contractors, and clients.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE licenseRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building structures, often in office and construction sitesWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and water systems, in offices and field sites
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and structural design firmsBroader industry scope including transportation, environmental, and urban planning

Structural engineers primarily focus on designing and analyzing building frameworks to ensure safety and stability, while civil engineers work on a wider range of infrastructure projects. Both roles require similar credentials and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities and project types differ.

What is the work of a structural engineer?

A structural engineer designs, analyzes, and oversees the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and capable of withstanding environmental forces. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and building codes to develop plans and review construction processes. Certification and knowledge of materials and load calculations are essential for this role.

What jobs do structural engineers do?

Structural engineers design, analyze, and oversee the construction of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure to ensure safety and stability. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and knowledge of materials to create plans and solve structural problems throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

Who we are
Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress.
Over the last decade, software has transformed the digital world. But the physical world, where food is made, minerals are mined, goods are moved, and industries are run, remains far less intelligent, far less efficient, and far more constrained. We're changing that.
Atoms builds Physical AI- real-world robots for the industries that move civilization forward, starting with food, mining, and transport. Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the real world with precision, turning complex physical operations into something more reliable, more scalable, and more productive.
This work requires more than robotics. It requires deep integration across hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate. We don't just build machines in a lab. We deploy them into real environments, operate them, learn from them, and improve them until they work at scale.
We are roboticists, engineers, operators, and builders. We believe the next great technology companies will not only transform information, but the physical systems that shape everyday life.
If you want to work on hard problems with real-world impact, join us.
What you'll do
  • Lead structural design and analysis across Atoms' physical infrastructure ventures, including kitchen and food production facilities, industrial and logistics buildings, and EV/AV charging and support infrastructure.
  • Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and specifications for permit submittal across multiple jurisdictions and business lines.
  • Perform geotechnical review and foundation design in coordination with soils engineers and site civil teams.
  • Partner with Architecture, Civil, Construction, and Facility Tech teams across Atoms' portfolio companies to resolve structural conflicts and keep designs constructible and cost-effective.
  • Conduct structural site assessments and existing-conditions evaluations for retrofit, adaptive reuse, and rapid buildout projects.
  • Evaluate vendor and manufacturer structural submittals (prefabricated structures, equipment enclosures, modular systems) for code compliance and site suitability.
  • Build and refine standardized structural details and design templates that can be reused across Atoms' different business lines to support rapid, repeatable deployment across markets.

What we're looking for
  • 7-10 years of structural engineering experience, including design of low-rise, light industrial, or site/civil-adjacent structures
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; ability to obtain additional state licensure/reciprocity as needed
  • Demonstrated experience with foundation design and support structures for commercial, industrial, or infrastructure facilities
  • Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, and AISC design standards, with exposure to local/state amendments
  • Experience preparing permit-ready structural drawings and managing AHJ plan review cycles
  • Comfort working across multiple, fast-moving business lines and adapting structural standards to different facility types

Ideal Background
  • Commercial real estate, industrial/warehouse structural design, site civil or foundation engineering
  • Food service or commercial kitchen facility development, modular/prefabricated building systems
  • Multi-site infrastructure programs (retail, logistics, energy, or transportation) requiring repeatable structural standards across a fast-scaling portfolio

Core Competencies
  • Structural Analysis & Design (steel, concrete, foundations)
  • Code Compliance (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC)
  • Cross-functional Collaboration across multiple business lines and portfolio companies
  • Permitting & AHJ Plan Review Management
  • Detail Orientation & High-Velocity Execution across multiple concurrent sites
  • Vendor & Submittal Evaluation
  • Clear Technical Communication with non-engineering stakeholders

Why join us
At Atoms, you'll work on one of the defining challenges of our time-bringing automation into the physical world to drive real, lasting impact. The work is ambitious and often challenging, but it's grounded in a shared sense of purpose and a team committed to seeing it through together. Our work only matters if it serves others, and we know that meaningful progress depends on the trust of the people we serve and the strength of our team-so we invest in both, creating an environment where you can do your best work and grow
