Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

Project Manager/Senior Project Manager - (Major Projects)

VHB's Massachusetts Highway and Structures Team is seeking a Project Managers/Senior Project Managers to support the delivery of complex transportation infrastructure projects across Massachusetts and New England.

These roles will work with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, planners, and specialists supporting highway corridor improvements, complex and signature bridges, rail modernization projects, and airport infrastructure using both traditional and alternative procurement.

The positions offer the opportunity to guide major pursuits, collaborate directly with public agency clients, and help shape the growth of VHB's transportation practice.

You will work alongside experienced technical leaders and project managers on some of the region's most complex transportation infrastructure projects, gaining exposure to major programs while taking on increasing responsibility in project delivery, client coordination, and team leadership.

VHB's transportation practice continues to expand across New England and beyond creating opportunities for experienced leaders.  This role provides strong opportunities for professional growth, increasing project leadership responsibility, and continued career development within VHB's transportation practice.

Responsibilities

  • Lead major pursuits and contribute to the delivery of complex transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, planners, and specialists in the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of highway, bridge, rail, transit, and airport infrastructure projects.
  • Deliver projects from proposal development through design and construction support.
  • Provide leadership for project execution including scope development, technical approach, schedule, budget management, and quality performance.
  • Direct and mentor technical staff in the preparation of engineering designs, plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and bid documents.
  • Serve as a primary technical liaison with clients, subconsultants, and contractors, representing VHB in project meetings and technical discussions.
  • Support construction coordination by providing design guidance, addressing constructability considerations, and assisting with technical issue resolution during construction.
  • Support client coordination and assist in business development and project pursuits.
  • Contribute to team collaboration, mentorship, and the continued growth of the transportation practice.
  • Promote VHB's standards for technical excellence, project management, risk management, and quality delivery.

 Skills and Attributes

  • Strong technical and critical thinking skills and interdisciplinary understanding
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented.
  • Familiarity with transportation design platforms such as Bentley OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Revit, and similar platforms.
  • Model-Based Design development and coordination experience and strong understanding.
  • Experience supporting integrated project delivery and schedule coordination tools is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of local regulations, code, and design guides.  

 Minimum Qualifications

  • 8-11+ years of civil or structural engineering experience
  • BS in Civil Engineering (transportation or structural emphasis preferred)
  • Master's degree a plus 
  • Massachusetts Professional Engineer licensure (licensure in other New England or other States is a strong plus only in addition to Massachusetts)
  • Mid-to-large scale traditional and design-build complex transportation project management and construction support experience required, including past experience supporting design management or project management on transportation infrastructure projects; experience in the role of design manager, or deputy design manager, are a strong plus.
  • Experience working with public transportation agencies such as MassDOT, MBTA, Massport, or similar regional agencies is preferred.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Boston/Watertown, MA is $115,000-170,000 and the position located in Worcester, MA is $105,000-160,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
