What is a structural engineer manager?

A Structural Engineer Manager is a senior-level engineering professional who oversees teams of structural engineers in the design, analysis, and inspection of buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their responsibilities include managing project timelines and budgets, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and codes, mentoring junior engineers, and coordinating with other departments or clients. This role requires strong leadership skills and extensive experience in structural engineering to ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer manager?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Expertise in structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD, as well as project management certifications like PMP, are commonly required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in managing teams and coordinating with stakeholders. These skills ensure the successful delivery of safe, efficient, and cost-effective structural projects while leading and motivating engineering teams.

How does a structural engineer manager typically balance project oversight with team leadership responsibilities?

A Structural Engineer Manager is responsible for overseeing multiple projects while also leading and mentoring a team of engineers. This balance is achieved by delegating technical tasks appropriately, conducting regular check-ins to monitor progress, and providing guidance on complex engineering challenges. The manager also ensures that team members have opportunities for professional growth, while maintaining open communication with clients and other departments to keep projects on track. Effective time management and prioritization are key, as the role requires both strategic oversight and hands-on involvement in technical and personnel matters.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer Manager vs Structural Engineer?

Job description

Job Title: Mid-Level Structural Engineer

Job Description

This mid-level Structural Engineer role focuses on building design and offers the opportunity to move beyond task-based work into independent design ownership. You will work with steel and concrete structural systems, perform structural analysis, and contribute to seismic design on large-scale commercial, healthcare, institutional, workplace, and aviation projects. The role sits within a collaborative, multidisciplinary studio where engineers work closely with architects, MEP, lighting, and BIM teams, gaining exposure to full building systems and diverse, design-driven challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and own structural design tasks for building projects, progressing from task-based work to independent design responsibility.
  • Develop structural designs for steel and concrete systems, ensuring safety, constructability, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Perform structural analysis using tools such as ETABS, SAFE, and SAP2000 to evaluate building performance and system behavior.
  • Apply relevant building codes and standards, including seismic design provisions, to structural calculations and design decisions.
  • Incorporate seismic design principles into structural solutions, particularly for projects in seismically active regions.
  • Produce and review structural drawings and models in Revit, coordinating closely with BIM support and other disciplines.
  • Collaborate directly with in-house MEP and lighting teams in a multidisciplinary environment to develop integrated building systems.
  • Work closely with architects and project managers to align structural solutions with overall design intent and project goals.
  • Manage and prioritize 2–4 projects or tasks simultaneously while maintaining organization, quality, and schedule commitments.
  • Communicate complex structural and seismic concepts clearly to cross-functional teams, including architects, engineers, and PMs.
  • Contribute to large-scale commercial, healthcare, institutional, workplace, and aviation interiors projects, supporting long-term engagements.
  • Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings to resolve interdisciplinary issues and improve overall building performance.
  • Support the growth and dynamic of the engineering team by collaborating with engineers, engineering practice leaders, and BIM staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of calculations, assumptions, and design decisions for internal review and external submissions.

Essential Skills

  • 4–6 years of structural engineering experience, with a target profile of approximately 3–5 years and readiness for increased responsibility.
  • Strong experience with steel and concrete structural systems in building design.
  • Solid structural analysis with the ability to run analyses independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to reference and apply building codes and structural standards without heavy oversight.
  • Exposure to seismic design, ideally with experience on West Coast projects or other seismically active regions.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software including ETABS, SAFE, and SAP2000.
  • Experience using Revit for structural modeling and documentation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, with seismic coursework strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on large-scale commercial, healthcare, and institutional projects.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to architects, engineers, and project managers.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects or tasks (typically 2–4) simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining organization.
  • Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams to meet project goals and timelines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Bentley software is a plus.
  • Structural engineering for workplace and aviation interiors projects is beneficial.
  • Comfort working in a design-driven environment with a focus on impactful, high-quality building solutions.
  • Ability to work autonomously while remaining highly collaborative within a studio setting.
  • Interest in contributing to the growth of regional engineering teams and engaging with practice leadership.
  • Seismic design coursework or specialized training beyond core degree requirements is preferred.

Work Environment

The role is based within a multidisciplinary engineering and design studio where structural engineers collaborate closely with in-house MEP, lighting, BIM, and architectural teams. The environment emphasizes design-driven, integrated building solutions and provides exposure to full building systems rather than isolated structural scope. The position follows a hybrid work schedule with three days in the office and the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays. You will engage with projects in Seattle and other global locations, and work within a regional structure that includes engineering practice leaders across mechanical, plumbing, structural, and electrical disciplines. The studio culture is collaborative and supportive, with strong leadership, long-term project opportunities, and diverse design challenges that encourage professional growth and increased responsibility. Dress code is typical of a professional office setting, aligned with a modern design studio environment.
