What does a structural engineer intern do?

A Structural Engineer Intern assists experienced engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. Their responsibilities often include creating computer-aided design (CAD) drawings, performing calculations, preparing reports, and attending site visits. Interns gain hands-on experience with engineering software and learn about building codes, construction materials, and project management, all under the supervision of licensed engineers. This role provides valuable insight into the daily tasks and challenges of structural engineering and helps interns develop practical skills for their future careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer intern?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, often supported by progress toward a civil or structural engineering degree. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, as well as knowledge of building codes and standards, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate with team members and convey complex ideas clearly. These skills and qualities are important for ensuring safety, accuracy, and successful project outcomes in structural engineering roles.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a structural engineer intern?

As a Structural Engineer Intern, you will typically assist with the design, analysis, and review of structural components for buildings, bridges, or other infrastructure projects. Your daily tasks may include preparing drawings using CAD software, running basic calculations, conducting site visits with experienced engineers, and helping to ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations. You'll often collaborate closely with senior engineers and other interns, gaining exposure to multiple project phases and disciplines. This hands-on experience is valuable for building your technical skills and understanding real-world engineering workflows.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer Intern vs Civil Engineering Intern?

Job description

Astra Spacecraft Engineer Intern

Astra's mission is to improve life on Earth from space by creating a healthier and more connected planet. Today, Astra offers one of the lowest cost-per-launch dedicated orbital launch services, and one of the industry's leading flight-proven electric propulsion systems for satellites, the Astra Spacecraft Engine.

The Opportunity

We are seeking highly motivated incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors in any discipline to join our team developing advanced spacecraft and launch vehicle systems. Based on interests, skills, and company needs, successful applicants will be matched to specific teams after the initial hiring process.

How You'll Fulfill Your Mission
  • Contribute to Design & Development: Work with senior engineers to design, develop, and test spacecraft and launch vehicle hardware.
  • Systems Engineering: Support requirements definition, interface management, and integration activities for flight systems spanning spacecraft and launch vehicles.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Assist with CAD modeling, design for manufacturability, and structural/thermal design of components such as thrusters, tanks, structures, or engine hardware.
  • Analysis Engineering: Perform structural, thermal, or fluid analyses for both spacecraft subsystems and launch vehicle components; contribute to trade studies that guide major design decisions.
  • Testing & Verification: Participate in test campaigns (vibration, thermal-vacuum, propulsion performance, or structural testing) to validate designs against flight requirements.
  • Collaboration: Work on cross-disciplinary teams across spacecraft and launch vehicle programs to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Documentation: Support the preparation of engineering drawings, test reports, and design documentation to industry standards.
  • General Disciplines (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, HR, Business Management, IT, Computer Science, etc.): Support the overall organization infrastructure.
Why We Value You
  • You MUST be an incoming sophomore, junior, or senior at a 4-yr institution or junior/community college to be eligible.
  • Hands-on project experience through internships, research, senior design projects, or extracurricular activities.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Motivation to learn in a fast-paced environment.

The pay range for this role is: $22/hr

Expected start date: Fall 2026
