What is a structural engineer EIT?

A Structural Engineer EIT (Engineer-in-Training) is a graduate engineer who has completed a degree in civil or structural engineering and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. This designation indicates that the individual is working toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and typically works under the supervision of a licensed PE. Structural Engineer EITs assist in designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure their safety and compliance with codes. They gain practical experience as part of the required steps to achieve full licensure. The EIT certification signals a commitment to the engineering profession and ongoing professional development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer EIT?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer EIT, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, structural analysis, and a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering along with Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, and structural design codes is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and code-compliant structural designs that meet client and regulatory standards.

What opportunities for mentorship and professional development are typically available to structural engineer EITs within engineering firms?

As a Structural Engineer EIT (Engineer in Training), you can expect to work closely with licensed Professional Engineers who provide mentorship and guidance as you develop your technical skills. Many firms offer structured training programs, regular feedback sessions, and opportunities to participate in project meetings, which help you gain practical experience. EITs are often encouraged to attend workshops, pursue continuing education, and prepare for the PE (Professional Engineer) exam. This supportive environment is designed to help you progress toward licensure and greater responsibilities within the company.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer Eit vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural Engineer EitCivil Engineer
CredentialsEIT certification, engineering degreeEngineering degree, often EIT or PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, construction sites, consultingConstruction, transportation, urban planning

Both Structural Engineer Eit and Civil Engineer often hold similar credentials and work in related environments. However, Structural Engineer Eit specializes in structural design and analysis, while Civil Engineers have a broader scope including infrastructure and transportation projects. The choice depends on your specific career focus within engineering.

Is there a high demand for structural engineers?

Structural engineers are in high demand due to ongoing infrastructure development, construction projects, and the need for building safety and resilience. Employment opportunities are strong in both public and private sectors, especially for those with professional licensure and proficiency in design software like AutoCAD and Revit.

Job description

Job Title: Structural Engineer (EIT) - Advanced Facilities & Industrial Infrastructure
Role Overview
We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented Structural Engineer (EIT) to join our multi-disciplinary infrastructure design team. In this role, you will assist in the structural analysis and design of large-scale, advanced industrial and commercial facilities. Working under the guidance of a Structural Lead, you will help translate design concepts into precise construction documents and 3D models. This position is ideal for an early-career engineer with a solid foundation in structural fundamentals who is eager to take on increasing responsibility, develop technical leadership, and master complex structural systems.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Analysis & Design Support
โ€ข Technical Execution: Competently perform conventional aspects of structural analysis and design for steel and concrete structures under general supervision.
โ€ข Code Application: Utilize and apply US building codes-including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, and AISC-with a developing focus on lateral analysis and design (wind and seismic provisions).
โ€ข Multi-Discipline Integration: Collaborate closely with structural designers, drafters, and engineers from other disciplines to integrate structural requirements seamlessly into project models and design documents.
Project Ownership & Quality Control
โ€ข Task Ownership: Take complete ownership of your assigned portion of the structural scope, reliably working to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
โ€ข Proactive Problem Solving: Handle tasks with developing conditions of satisfaction by taking the initiative to clarify project needs and escalating scope changes to the Structural Lead.
โ€ข Rigorous Quality Control: Maintain a high level of attention to detail by checking your own work and assisting with routine calculation checks of other engineers' work.
โ€ข Workload Management: Clearly define your day-to-day scope and build your capability to forecast the level of effort required to complete engineering tasks.
Qualifications & Requirements
โ€ข Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, with a specific emphasis in Structural Engineering (Master's Degree is a plus).
โ€ข Certification: Active Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is required.
โ€ข Experience:
oMinimum of 2 years of professional experience in structural engineering.
oHands-on familiarity with traditional steel and concrete building systems.
oPrevious exposure to heavy industrial, general industrial, or advanced technology facility design is preferred.
โ€ข Software Familiarity (Preferred): Exposure to structural engineering analysis software (e.g., STAAD), coordination tools (Navisworks), and Bluebeam.
โ€ข Soft Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, strong interpersonal skills, and a collaborative approach to solving complex engineering challenges.
