What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Assistant, you need a background in civil or structural engineering, strong mathematical skills, and familiarity with engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, along with knowledge of building codes, is typically required. Effective communication, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential soft skills for collaborating with engineers and ensuring project accuracy. These abilities are crucial for supporting efficient project design, compliance, and successful execution within engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Structural Engineer Assistant when collaborating with senior engineers and architects?

As a Structural Engineer Assistant, one of the main challenges is effectively communicating technical information to both senior engineers and architects, who may have different priorities and perspectives. You may also need to balance multiple projects at once, ensuring that your work meets strict deadlines and complies with industry standards. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements and learning to use specialized software under supervision are common aspects of the role. Building strong teamwork and organizational skills will help you overcome these challenges and contribute effectively to the design and analysis process.

What are Structural Engineer Assistants?

Structural Engineer Assistants support structural engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their responsibilities typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting site visits, assisting with calculations, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. They often work alongside engineers to gather data, create reports, and help resolve engineering problems, making them an essential part of any construction or civil engineering team.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer Assistant vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural Engineer AssistantCivil Engineer
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering, internshipsBachelor's or higher in Civil Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, construction sites, engineering firmsConstruction sites, design offices, urban planning agencies

Job description

At ANS, weโ€™re not just a consulting engineering firmโ€”weโ€™re a team of trailblazers shaping the future of multi-disciplinary engineering. Recognized as one of the Best Places to Work and Top 10 Hottest Firm by Zweig Reports and featured in Inc. 5000โ€™s Top 250 for our staggering 1,748% growth, we're proud of what we've built and where we're headed.โ€ฏ
We're allergic to bureaucracy, thrive on innovation, and embrace data-driven decisions. If you love collaboration, creativity, and a fast-paced environment, we might just be your perfect match!โ€ฏ
ย
We are seeking an experienced High Voltage Senior Structural Engineer with a specific focus on high-voltage substations and electrical infrastructure. This individual will be responsible for managing and executing structural scopes for substation projects from concept through IFC, including design of foundations for control enclosures, transformers, breakers, dead-ends, and other major HV equipment.ย
ย
This role requires a strong familiarity with structural requirements unique to substations, including coordination with electrical teams, vendor specifications, foundation optimization, and document production aligned with milestone submittals. You'll play a key role in shaping and scaling our HV structural team and supporting utility and interconnection projects for renewable energy clients.ย
Technical Leadership & Oversight:
  • Lead structural engineering efforts for utility substation projects including control enclosures, transformer foundations, dead-end structures, capacitor banks, and static mastsย
  • Review project documents and develop structural Basis of Design (BOD), including loads, design codes, geotechnical inputs, and material assumptionsย
  • Design and size shallow and deep foundations (e.g., spread footings, drilled piers, embedded posts) based on geotechnical recommendations and equipment loadsย
  • Perform load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic) and develop structural models using accepted FEA tools (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD)ย
  • Coordinate with geotechnical engineers to integrate foundation performance assumptions and loading capacities (e.g., LPILE, MFAD inputs)ย
  • Prepare structural drawings, elevations, details, and specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit for each milestone (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC)ย
Client & Vendor Coordination:
  • Coordinate with electrical engineers, control enclosure vendors, transformer manufacturers, and structure suppliers to obtain and interpret structural performance requirementsย
  • Support client-facing meetings to present a design approach and resolve technical commentsย
  • Review vendor-supplied structural performance requirements and incorporate into foundation and anchorage designย
  • Respond to RFIs and submittals related to structural foundations, design assumptions, and special inspectionsย
Other Areas of Focus:
  • Provide input on internal design standards, templates, and QA/QC processes for substation projectsย
  • Assist in developing resource plans, scopes, and estimates for future HV structural projectsย
  • Serve as a technical mentor to junior structural engineers working on electrical infrastructureย
  • Collaborate with civil and geotechnical teams to ensure fully integrated substation site designย
  • Stay current on relevant codes (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, etc.), utility standards, and AHJ requirementsย
Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)ย
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in civil or Structural Engineering (Masterโ€™s preferred)ย
  • 8+ years of structural engineering experience, including at least 3โ€“5 years specifically supporting high voltage substations or transmission infrastructureย
  • Proficiency with structural design software (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD, or equivalent FEA tools)ย
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; Revit experience a plusย
  • Strong understanding of applicable codes and standards (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, IEEE, utility-specific structural criteria)ย
  • Experience with interpretation of geotechnical reports and integration of foundation parameters (bearing capacity, LPILE, corrosion, etc.)ย
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and client-facing skillsย
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for field visits, site walkdowns, or client meetings (approx. 5โ€“10%)ย
