What are Structural Engineer Assistants?

Structural Engineer Assistants support structural engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their responsibilities typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting site visits, assisting with calculations, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. They often work alongside engineers to gather data, create reports, and help resolve engineering problems, making them an essential part of any construction or civil engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Assistant, you need a background in civil or structural engineering, strong mathematical skills, and familiarity with engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, along with knowledge of building codes, is typically required. Effective communication, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential soft skills for collaborating with engineers and ensuring project accuracy. These abilities are crucial for supporting efficient project design, compliance, and successful execution within engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Structural Engineer Assistant when collaborating with senior engineers and architects?

As a Structural Engineer Assistant, one of the main challenges is effectively communicating technical information to both senior engineers and architects, who may have different priorities and perspectives. You may also need to balance multiple projects at once, ensuring that your work meets strict deadlines and complies with industry standards. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements and learning to use specialized software under supervision are common aspects of the role. Building strong teamwork and organizational skills will help you overcome these challenges and contribute effectively to the design and analysis process.

Job description

We are seeking a Junior Structural Engineer to support structural design and project delivery. This role is ideal for an engineer who is past entry-level and ready to take ownership of defined technical tasks-producing reliable calculations, coordinated drawings, and disciplined documentation-under the guidance of senior engineers. A detail-oriented, quality-driven approach and strong follow-through are essential.

Key Responsibilities Structural Design Support Prepare engineering calculations and design checks under supervision (load paths, gravity framing, basic lateral checks, member sizing, and detailing coordination). Support structural analysis/modeling and help develop structural design deliverables (plans, details, schedules, calculation packages). Translate design intent into clear markups and coordinate updates with drafting/modeling resources.

Drawings, Submittals & Technical Coordination Review structural drawings and project documents for consistency, constructability, and coordination with architectural/MEP/civil interfaces. Support responses to RFIs and submittals by gathering background, confirming criteria, and drafting technical responses for senior review. Track and resolve structural coordination items and ensure timely follow-through.

Documentation & QA/QC Compile organized, audit-ready calculation packages, design narratives, and decision logs. Perform self-checks and support QA/QC reviews using internal standards/checklists; flag discrepancies early. Maintain clean file organization and version control for models, drawings, and calculation folders.

Construction-Phase Support (As Needed) Participate in site visits/observations with senior staff; document conditions, photos, and action items. Assist in evaluating field conditions and proposed solutions; escalate risks/impacts appropriately.Required Qualifications (Must Have) Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (Structural concentration) from an accredited institution. 2-3 years of structural engineering experience (analysis, design support, documentation, coordination)
