Structural Engineer Assistant information

What is a structural engineer assistant?

Structural Engineer Assistants support structural engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their responsibilities typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting site visits, assisting with calculations, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. They often work alongside engineers to gather data, create reports, and help resolve engineering problems, making them an essential part of any construction or civil engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Assistant, you need a background in civil or structural engineering, strong mathematical skills, and familiarity with engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, along with knowledge of building codes, is typically required. Effective communication, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential soft skills for collaborating with engineers and ensuring project accuracy. These abilities are crucial for supporting efficient project design, compliance, and successful execution within engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a structural engineer assistant when collaborating with senior engineers and architects?

As a Structural Engineer Assistant, one of the main challenges is effectively communicating technical information to both senior engineers and architects, who may have different priorities and perspectives. You may also need to balance multiple projects at once, ensuring that your work meets strict deadlines and complies with industry standards. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements and learning to use specialized software under supervision are common aspects of the role. Building strong teamwork and organizational skills will help you overcome these challenges and contribute effectively to the design and analysis process.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer Assistant vs Civil Engineer?

The Structural Engineer Assistant typically supports structural design and analysis under supervision, focusing on specific projects. Civil Engineers have broader responsibilities, including planning, design, and overseeing infrastructure projects. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, Civil Engineers often hold professional licensure and handle more complex tasks across various engineering disciplines.

Job description

Job Description RCS Staffing has an immediate need for a Civil/Structural Engineer 4. This is a full-time, direct-hire, office-based assignment with our client. This position offers a competitive compensation package including benefits, vacation, and holidays.

Overview of YOUR Role as a Civil/Structural Engineer 4 In this senior-level engineering role, you will apply extensive Civil, Structural, and Architectural (CS&A) knowledge to take complex building and infrastructure projects from concept through final design and construction. You will work independently on challenging engineered systems, lead and direct the work of designers and junior engineers, and serve as a technical authority within multi-discipline project teams. This role demands a high degree of creativity, independent judgment, and deep expertise in engineering principles, codes, and analytical methods.

As a Civil/Structural Engineer 4, YOU Will: Perform a variety of engineering calculations using traditional methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to document compliance with project and code requirements, including foundation analyses, structural frame analyses, and one-off FEA model analyses. Generate and interpret layout plans, foundation details, steelwork details, and architectural feature designs. Assist in the preparation and approval of design documents and plant modifications, including supervision of designers in document development in accordance with approved procedures and design requirements.

Provide technical expertise and guidance to develop, manage, and implement engineering analyses, activities, and programs to identify and resolve equipment and system problems. Ensure relevant design criteria, specifications, practices, procedures, codes, and safety and licensing basis requirements are properly applied in the preparation of design media. Perform checking to ensure the accuracy of design media in accordance with company policies, procedures, and client expectations.

Work within multi-discipline teams on project-based work, ensuring integration of design across multiple engineering disciplines. Recommend new equipment, concepts, and techniques to improve performance, simplify design, reduce costs, correct design flaws, or comply with changes in client requirements, codes, or regulations. Perform independent research, reviews, studies, and analyses in support of plant changes and design modifications.

Support installation and testing of site systems and components. Participate in the preparation of cost estimates for engineering services and coordinate work assignments to meet project schedules and budgets. Interface with staff, internal teams, and supporting subcontractors to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.

May act as Lead Discipline Engineer or Engineering Manager on dedicated projects. Perform other duties as assigned. YOU Are the Ideal Civil/Structural Engineer 4 Candidate If You Have: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related technical discipline (required).

A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in civil, structural, and/or architectural engineering. Advanced knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and civil/structural design software. Strong knowledge of national codes and standards applicable to the CS&A engineering discipline.

Demonstrated ability to manage complex engineering projects and lead multi-discipline design teams. Strong communication skills, with the ability to present design media clearly to clients and internal stakeholders. Experience working independently on complex engineered systems with significant latitude for creative and technical decision-making.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. It's a BONUS If You Have: A Professional Engineering (PE) license. Experience serving as Lead Discipline Engineer or Engineering Manager on large capital or infrastructure projects.

Background in nuclear, power generation, or other highly regulated industrial environments. Familiarity with plant modifications, design document approval processes, and multi-discipline project integration.
