Structural Engineer Assistant information

What is a structural engineer assistant?

Structural Engineer Assistants support structural engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their responsibilities typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting site visits, assisting with calculations, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. They often work alongside engineers to gather data, create reports, and help resolve engineering problems, making them an essential part of any construction or civil engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Assistant, you need a background in civil or structural engineering, strong mathematical skills, and familiarity with engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, along with knowledge of building codes, is typically required. Effective communication, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential soft skills for collaborating with engineers and ensuring project accuracy. These abilities are crucial for supporting efficient project design, compliance, and successful execution within engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a structural engineer assistant when collaborating with senior engineers and architects?

As a Structural Engineer Assistant, one of the main challenges is effectively communicating technical information to both senior engineers and architects, who may have different priorities and perspectives. You may also need to balance multiple projects at once, ensuring that your work meets strict deadlines and complies with industry standards. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements and learning to use specialized software under supervision are common aspects of the role. Building strong teamwork and organizational skills will help you overcome these challenges and contribute effectively to the design and analysis process.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer Assistant vs Civil Engineer?

The Structural Engineer Assistant typically supports structural design and analysis under supervision, focusing on specific projects. Civil Engineers have broader responsibilities, including planning, design, and overseeing infrastructure projects. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, Civil Engineers often hold professional licensure and handle more complex tasks across various engineering disciplines.

Job Description

Our Structural Engineers are responsible for the structural design for new structures as well as existing structural upgrades. Our engineers design unique and challenging projects, and perform investigations to make expert recommendations to clients for various purposes. Activities include site investigations, structural engineering and drafting for both front end planning and the detailed engineering phase for multi-discipline projects.

Principle objective

As a Mid-Level Structural Engineer you will have Discipline Lead responsibilities as part of multi-discipline project teams. As the Engineer you will be responsible for leading a team of engineers and designers to develop and design the structural portion of projects, make design recommendations and decisions, and oversee the completion and quality of construction drawings, specifications, reports, and other project documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as project lead engineer for small projects and larger projects with little oversight, managing the production effort of staff assigned to the project in terms of quality, budget, and schedule, overseeing the work throughout various project stages – from conceptual, feasibility, and detailed design through construction.

  • Assist as required in the preparation of proposals and marketing materials through definition and write-ups of project scope and activities on past projects.

  • Establish project scope, structural budgets, and design approach.

  • Meet with client personnel to assist in preliminary planning and identifying design concepts.

  • Work with clients and professional counterparts to ensure projects are delivered on-time, within budget, meeting, and/or exceeding client expectations.

  • Responsible for the design of structural systems and components for a variety of commercial and industrial facility types; ensuring the designs conform to recognized codes and standards, as well as client requirements.

  • Duties will include structural engineering, structural details, analysis and design, and writing technical and study reports.

  • Participate in planning, designing, or reviewing plans, working closely with mechanical, process, electrical, architectural, and civil disciplines to deliver successful projects.

  • Visits to project sites to collect data and to observe construction progress.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Structural Engineering

  • Knowledge of steel, concrete, timber design and familiarity with applicable codes (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, etc.).

  • Preferred software knowledge and requirements include Revit, BIM, AutoCAD, RISA 3D, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills necessary in order to effectively communicate with clients and employees, virtually and in-person, and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

  • Strong organizational, analytical and time management skills with high level of attention to detail and self-motivated to be successful.

  • Ability to identify and establish work priorities, setting deadlines, while balancing multiple projects.

  • Must be adaptable, able to problem solve and work under tight deadlines, and able to learn and apply new technologies with minimal support.

  • Must possess working knowledge of current industry codes and standards, and have experience with the latest engineering analysis software and techniques.

  • Ability to maintain and develop relationships with both existing and potential clients and recognize their needs, respond to and build on responsibilities accordingly.

  • PE is preferred, or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.
