Job description

Job Title: Structural Detailer

About Us: Johnson Metal Works is an established custom metal fabrication company known for our innovative and high-quality structural, architectural and OEM metalwork. Our in-house capabilities include flat and tube laser cutting, forming using a 250-ton sheet metal brake, welding, and finishing. We serve industry companies, OEMs, architects, and general contractors. Join our dynamic team and help bring our customers' visions to life!

Role Overview: As a structural detailer at Johnson Metal Works, you'll play a pivotal role in our production workflow. Collaborate closely with our skilled fabrication team to strategize and design with an emphasis on manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, functionality and safety. You'll work largely on detailing for our structural metal department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drawing and Modeling: Create detailed, accurate drawings and 3D models that meet specifications and are clear to shop operators.
  • Compliance and Quality Control: Ensure all designs follow formatting best practices and meet JMW and industry standards.
  • Scope Management: Identify and communicate any project scope changes that may require change orders, supporting efficient project management.
  • RFI and Specification Support: Assist in responding to Requests for Information (RFIs) and clarifying design specifications as needed.
  • Document Control: Maintain organized digital and physical records for all designs, ensuring accessibility and traceability.
  • Adaptability in Design: Make necessary adjustments to designs as required by project needs or team feedback, demonstrating flexibility.
  • Learning and Development: Stay up-to-date with new procedures, tools, and organizational software as introduced by JMW.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Technical Proficiency: Bachelorโ€™s degree in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience in a structural detailing role.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and drawing software, with 1+ yr experience in structural detailing with Tekla.
  • Experience with DraftSight, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD are nice-to-haves.
  • Minimum of 1 year in a metal fabrication or design drafting role, preferably with experience in a custom or high-end fabrication setting.
  • Strong understanding of metal fabrication processes, including welding symbols and finishing techniques.
  • Some welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in interpretation of structural AND architectural plan sets.
  • Positive team-oriented attitude, with a commitment to craftsmanship and quality.
  • Strong organizational skills with acute attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, collaborate with team members, and adapt to new challenges.
  • Proficiency using Bluebeam, MS Office 365, and Smartsheets or other Project Management Software for project coordination and documentation.
