What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Designer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant degree and knowledge of building codes. Proficiency in CAD software, structural analysis tools like SAP2000 or ETABS, and familiarity with BIM systems are essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and innovative structural designs that meet project requirements and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by structural design professionals when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

Structural design professionals often work closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams, which can present challenges such as aligning design intent with practical construction constraints and meeting various stakeholders' requirements. Coordinating schedules, integrating feedback from different disciplines, and ensuring compliance with building codes are also frequent hurdles. Successful collaboration requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving to ensure that all elements of the project are cohesive and safe.

What is structural design?

Structural design is the process of creating safe, stable, and efficient frameworks for buildings, bridges, and other structures. It involves analyzing loads, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring that a structure can withstand environmental forces like wind, earthquakes, and weight. Structural designers use engineering principles and computer-aided design tools to develop plans that meet safety codes and client requirements. This field plays a crucial role in making sure that structures are both functional and durable.

What is the difference between Structural Design vs Civil Engineering?

AspectStructural DesignCivil Engineering
CredentialsEngineering degree, structural engineering licenseEngineering degree, civil engineering license
Work EnvironmentDesigning frameworks for buildings, bridges, and infrastructureBroader infrastructure projects, site development, transportation
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction and architecture firmsWider industry including transportation, urban planning

Structural Design focuses specifically on creating safe, efficient frameworks for buildings and structures, requiring specialized engineering credentials. Civil Engineering covers a broader range of infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and water systems. While both roles require engineering licenses and often work within the construction industry, Structural Design is more specialized in structural frameworks, whereas Civil Engineering encompasses a wider scope of infrastructure development.

Job description

V3 Companies, a multidisciplinary AEC firm, is seeking a Structural Design Technician to join our Structural Group in Woodridge, Illinois. This position supports the planning, design, and documentation of bridge and transportation infrastructure projects delivered for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois Tollway, and local agencies.

This role is focused on model‑based design and digital delivery within a Bentley design environment and works closely with structural engineers, roadway designers, and project managers throughout all phases of project development.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Assist with the preparation of structural drawings, layouts, and details for bridge and transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Develop and maintain structural discipline models using Bentley OpenBridge Modeler (OBM), OpenRoads Designer (ORD), MicroStation, and ProStructures, consistent with IDOT and Illinois Tollway requirements.
  • Generate 3D model elements and plan deliverables that align with the required Level of Development (LOD) at each project phase.
  • Produce contract drawings and digital deliverables derived from the approved structural models.
  • Coordinate the structural design with roadway and other discipline models through design reviews and 3D coordination processes.
  • Collaborate with project managers, structural engineers, and other team members to support project schedules and design objectives.
  • Review drawings and model content for accuracy, consistency, and conformance with applicable standards.
  • Support quality control efforts by addressing internal review and agency comments.
  • Maintain organized digital project files and documentation in accordance with company and agency CADD/BIM standards.

We’re looking for:

  • Associate’s degree in Computer‑Aided Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in structural drafting or design for bridge or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency with Bentley software, including OpenBridge Modeler (required) and MicroStation (required).
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer (preferred) and ProStructures (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of ProjectWise Design Integration, including the use of ProjectWise‑managed workspaces to access and apply project‑specific configurations, standards, and resources within Bentley applications.
  • Familiarity with IDOT and Illinois Tollway standards, including bridge plan presentation, digital deliverables, and model‑based workflows.
  • Working knowledge of structural and civil engineering principles related to bridge design.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary, benefits, and performance-based bonuses
  • Health savings Account with V3 funding contribution
  • Retirement plan with up to 6% company match
  • Paid time off, holidays, and volunteer paid time off
