Structural Design Manager information

What is the difference between Structural Design Manager vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural Design ManagerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, PE license typically required
Work EnvironmentLeads design teams, manages projects, collaborates with clients and stakeholdersPerforms analysis, design, and calculations, often under supervision or as part of a team
Industry UsageUsed in project management, overseeing design processes in construction and engineering firmsUsed in technical design, analysis, and drafting roles within engineering projects

The Structural Design Manager focuses on overseeing and managing structural design projects, leading teams, and coordinating with clients. In contrast, the Structural Engineer is primarily responsible for performing technical analysis, creating designs, and ensuring structural integrity. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and responsibilities within the engineering process.

What does a Structural Design Manager do?

A Structural Design Manager oversees the planning, design, and coordination of structural engineering projects such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They lead a team of engineers and drafters, ensuring that designs meet safety standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements. Their role includes managing project timelines, budgets, and collaboration with other departments like architecture and construction. Structural Design Managers also review and approve design calculations and drawings, and often liaise with clients and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Design Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Design Manager, you need deep expertise in structural engineering principles and project management, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency in structural analysis software (such as SAP2000, ETABS, or STAAD.Pro), AutoCAD, and BIM tools is essential, along with familiarity with relevant building codes and standards. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively guide design teams and coordinate with clients and stakeholders. These capabilities ensure safe, efficient, and innovative structural solutions while meeting project deadlines and regulatory requirements.

How does a Structural Design Manager typically collaborate with architects and construction teams during a project?

A Structural Design Manager plays a central role in facilitating communication between architects, engineers, and construction teams. They review architectural plans to ensure structural feasibility, coordinate design changes, and resolve technical challenges that arise during the project. Effective collaboration helps align structural solutions with the overall aesthetic and functional goals, ensuring that projects progress smoothly from design through construction. Regular meetings and clear documentation are essential parts of this collaborative process.

Job description

Description:

Background investigation, US Citizenship, CAC, and a confidential security clearance are requirements of this position. Travel is 20%.

TMMG is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to support the Engineering Design Team (EDT) in delivering high-impact engineering solutions across naval and commercial shipbuilding programs.

This role is not a traditional โ€œdesk-onlyโ€ design position. The selected candidate will operate as a hands-on technical leader, bridging engineering, production, and waterfront execution. The engineer will be expected to solve real shipyard problems, validate designs against actual installed conditions, and ensure structural solutions support constructability, test readiness, and delivery schedules. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in ship structures, strong analysis and design capability, and the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, multi-discipline environments.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

1. Structural Design & Analysis

โ€ข Develop and review structural designs for:

o Hull structures, foundations, and reinforcements

o Equipment foundations (shock, vibration, and mission systems)

o Deck structures, bulkheads, and support systems

โ€ข Perform structural calculations and analyses, including:

o Static and dynamic loading

o Fatigue and stress analysis

o Shock and vibration (DDAM / Navy shock requirements preferred)

โ€ข Ensure compliance with:

o ABS, USCG, NAVSEA, and applicable classification rules

o Contract specifications and regulatory requirements

2. Shipyard & Waterfront Integration

โ€ข Interface directly with:

o Production teams

o Planning and scheduling

o Test & Trials teams

โ€ข Validate structural designs against:

o As-built and installed conditions

o Construction sequencing and access constraints

โ€ข Identify and resolve:

o Design gaps impacting production

o Interferences and constructability issues

โ€ข Support deckplate problem-solving to keep work moving

3. Engineering Change & Configuration Control

โ€ข Review and develop:

o Engineering Change Notices (ECNs)

o Work Orders and field changes

โ€ข Assess impacts to:

o Structure integrity

o Schedule and sequencing

o Material and installation

โ€ข Ensure structural changes are:

o Technically sound

o Buildable in the shipyard environment

4. Shock, Load & Specialty Analysis

โ€ข Perform or support:

o Equipment mounting and foundation design

o Load path verification and structural adequacy

โ€ข Support customers with:

o Analytical assessments

o Data requirements definition

o Technical reporting and recommendations

5. Drawing Development & Review

โ€ข Develop and review:

o 2D drawings and structural details (AutoCAD or equivalent)

o 3D model outputs (Navisworks, ShipConstructor, or similar)

โ€ข Ensure drawings:

o Reflect real installation conditions

o Support production sequencing

โ€ข Align with configuration control requirements

6. Client & Program Support

โ€ข Interface with clients, including:

o Shipyards

o Government representatives (NAVSEA, USCG, MSC)

o OEMs and vendors

โ€ข Provide:

o Technical recommendations

o Clear, actionable communication

โ€ข Support proposal efforts and technical write-ups when needed

7. Mentorship & Leadership

โ€ข Provide technical guidance to:

o Junior engineers

o Designers and drafters

โ€ข Establish best practices for:

o Structural design and analysis

o Shipyard integration

โ€ข Serve as a go-to technical authority within EDT

Physical Requirements

โ€ข Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

โ€ข Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.

โ€ข Must be able to access and inspect all areas of machinery.

Education/Certification Requirements

Bachelorโ€™s Degree in:

โ€ข Naval Architecture, Structural Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering (with structural focus)

โ€ข Masterโ€™s Degree preferred

โ€ข 10+ years of experience in:

o Naval or commercial shipbuilding

o Structural design and analysis

โ€ข Proven experience supporting:

o Shipyard construction or waterfront execution

โ€ข Experience with:

o ABS, USCG, and/or NAVSEA standards

Technical Skills

โ€ข Strong proficiency in:

o Structural analysis methods and calculations

o AutoCAD (required)

o 3D modeling tools (preferred)

โ€ข Experience with:

o Shock analysis (DDAM preferred)

o Finite Element Analysis (FEA tools such as FEMAP, ANSYS, NX-NASTRAN, etc.)

โ€ข Ability to:

o Interpret and develop technical drawings

o Translate engineering into buildable solutions
