Job description

Build the future, spark innovation and align your career with purpose.

McKinstry is innovating the waste and climate harm out of the built environment and creating lasting impact. Together, we're building a thriving planet.

Buildings are a leading contributor to the climate crisis, generating nearly 40% of total global energy-related carbon emissions. We're making a lasting impact on our industry and within our communities by addressing the climate, affordability and equity crises through:

  • renewables and energy services
  • engineering and design
  • construction and facility services

To get where we're going, we need big thinkers, problem solvers and collaborative mindsets. Does that sound like you?

The Opportunity with McKinstry

The Senior Construction Technology Specialist is the most experienced hands-on technical contributor on the Construction Technology team, leading BIM coordination, model management, and project technology work on McKinstry's largest, most complex, and highest-stakes projects. The Senior Specialist serves as a senior peer to the Construction Technology Specialist team, handles the most challenging technical problems across the project portfolio, and contributes to the standards and processes that govern detailing technology work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead BIM coordination and VDC technology execution on McKinstry's largest, most complex, and highest-stakes projects (multi-trade engagements, data centers, large healthcare, and similar high-complexity work); serve as the senior VDC technical contact for these projects from preconstruction through closeout.

  • Handle the most technically challenging modeling, coordination, and platform work across the portfolio - complex clash resolution, model recovery situations, unusual fabrication or installation requirements, and escalated coordination problems that exceed the typical scope of a Construction Technology Specialist.

  • Provide peer technical leadership to the Construction Technology Specialist team: serve as the senior resource for difficult technical questions, lead by example in execution quality, and informally mentor team members through the work itself.

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of McKinstry's BIM execution standards, fabrication procedure alignment, content management practices, and platform configurations, partnering with the VDC Technology Manager who owns standards overall.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational updates based on hands-on project experience; partner with the VDC Technology Manager and the broader Construction Technology team to advance how the function operates.

  • Represent VDC Technology in complex client and General Contractor engagements where senior technical experience is required, including preconstruction reviews, high-stakes project pursuits, and escalated coordination issues.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in 3D/BIM modeling and model management in the AEC field, with a track record of leading complex project work.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with mechanical trades (piping, plumbing, or HVAC).

  • Advanced knowledge of Revit, Navisworks, and the broader Autodesk Construction Cloud ecosystem.

  • Strong understanding of construction project lifecycle, complex multi-trade coordination, and fabrication-driven detailing workflows.

  • Demonstrated experience leading VDC technology execution on the most complex projects, including large multi-trade jobs, data centers, healthcare, or similar high-complexity work.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle escalated technical problems independently - complex clash resolution, model recovery, and unusual coordination scenarios.

  • Strong peer mentorship and team collaboration skills; ability to lead by example and guide colleagues without formal authority.

  • Experience contributing to or developing standards, processes, or best practices within a detailing or VDC environment.

  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, including with external client and GC partners.

  • Organized self-starter capable of managing concurrent complex project responsibilities.

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft products including Word, OneDrive, Outlook; advanced Excel a plus.

  • Experience with iOS, Android, and Windows operating systems required.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems beyond detailing (installation, fabrication, commissioning).

  • Familiarity with Stratus, Bluebeam, Procore, and related construction technology platforms.

  • Familiarity with modern AI tools and willingness to apply AI/automation to BIM and detailing workflows.

  • Project Management exposure or formal training.

  • Previous experience in a senior technical leadership role within an A/E/C organization.

  • Curiosity and interest in technology solutions that improve project execution efficiency.
