Do PMs become CEOs?

Product Managers (PMs) develop skills in strategic thinking, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration, which can prepare them for executive roles like CEO. However, transitioning from a PM to CEO typically requires additional experience in areas such as operations, finance, and company management, and is not a direct or guaranteed career path. Many CEOs come from backgrounds in finance, operations, or general management rather than product management alone.

A strategic product manager's salary typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Senior roles or those in high-demand sectors can earn higher compensation, often including bonuses and stock options. What are Strategic Product Managers?

They analyze market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscapes to make informed decisions about product development and positioning. Their role often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as marketing, engineering, and sales, to successfully bring products to market and drive long-term growth. Strategic Product Managers focus on big-picture thinking to create value for both the company and its customers.

What does a strategic product manager do?

This collaborative approach not only helps in identifying and resolving potential roadblocks early but also ensures the product delivers maximum value to the market.

What's the highest paying PM job?

Senior and executive-level product management roles, such as Director of Product or Vice President of Product, tend to have the highest salaries in product management. These positions often require extensive experience, strategic skills, and leadership responsibilities, with compensation frequently exceeding $200,000 annually, especially in large tech companies or competitive markets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Strategic Product Manager, and why are they important?

Job description

About Us
Visa is a world leader in payments technology, facilitating transactions between consumers, merchants, financial institutions and government entities across more than 200 countries and territories, dedicated to uplifting everyone, everywhere by being the best way to pay and be paid.
At Visa, you'll have the opportunity to create impact at scale - tackling meaningful challenges, growing your skills and seeing your contributions impact lives around the world.
Join Visa and do work that matters - to you, to your community, and to the world. Progress starts with you.
Job Description
The Opportunity:
$120 trillion. That's the size of the global B2B payment market - and most of it still moves on manual, legacy rails that don't serve buyers, suppliers, or their banks. Visa Commercial Solutions is building the products that change this. Within our Large and Middle Market Global Product team, we're designing, launching, and scaling the next generation of commercial payment products - including virtual cards, flexible interchange, and programmable payment constructs - that help financial institutions unlock massive new revenue streams and commercial clients modernize how they pay. This role is your chance to be at the center of it.
As Senior Product Manager, Global B2B Strategic Initiatives, you'll own a portfolio of high-impact products and strategic workstreams that directly shape how billions of dollars in commercial spend flow through the Visa network. You'll scale products already gaining traction, partner with Visa's Strategy team on net-new offerings, and manage programs that give merchants and issuers the flexibility to capture previously uncarded B2B transactions.
What You'll Own
Dynamic Interchange for B2B: Scale & Optimize
  • Drive the next phase of growth for a product that enables banks to dynamically adjust interchange economics for qualifying B2B transactions
  • Optimize the product model, economic constructs, rules framework, and client onboarding to accelerate adoption across markets
  • Partner with Visa's Strategy, Pricing, and Technology teams to expand coverage, refine targeting, and deepen issuer value
  • Identify new segments and use cases where dynamic interchange can unlock commercial payment volume that was previously out of reach Global

Management: Visa Commercial Choice
  • Own the end-to-end product management and global scaling of Visa Commercial Choice
  • Drive adoption with issuing clients worldwide through clear positioning, differentiated value, and regional enablement
  • Continuously evolve the product based on market signals, competitive dynamics, and client feedback
  • Serve as the global subject-matter expert for flexible interchange constructs with clients, internal leadership, and regional teams

Purchasing & Large Ticket (PLT) Program
  • Manage and grow the Purchasing and Large Ticket program, which enables merchants to request elevated authorization limits for high-value B2B transactions
  • Optimize program rules, onboarding flows, and operational processes to accelerate adoption
  • Identify new verticals and use cases where large-ticket commercial payments can displace legacy payment methods (checks, wire, ACH)

Strategic Product Design (New Initiatives)
  • Partner directly with Visa's Strategy team to identify, design, and launch new products and services aimed at the buyer-supplier ecosystem via issuers and acquirers
  • Conduct market analysis, size opportunities, and develop business cases for new commercial offerings
  • Translate strategic intent into executable product plans with clear success metrics

Who You Are
You're a strategic product leader who builds, not just advises or takes orders. You see commercial payments not as a back-office function but as a trillion-dollar design problem. You're energized by ambiguity, move fast through complexity, and can credibly operate with C-suite bank executives and engineering teams in the same week.
You bring:
  • Strategic product thinking - You can connect a pricing model change to its downstream impact on issuer revenue, supplier acceptance, and cardholder behavior
  • Execution velocity - You ship. Strategy without delivery doesn't interest you.
  • Commercial payments depth - You understand interchange, scheme economics, issuer/acquirer dynamics, and the mechanics of how B2B payments actually work
  • Global instincts - You think about how products scale across markets, regulations, and client maturity levels
  • Stakeholder mastery - You can influence without authority across senior leadership, cross-functional teams, technology partners, and external clients
  • Builder's mentality - You create structure in ambiguous spaces, define roadmaps where none existed, and bring new products to market

Why This Role Is Different
  • Portfolio breadth - You own a scaling product, a growth program, and new strategic bets simultaneously. Most PM roles focus on one thing. This gives you strategic range.
  • Economic architecture - You're designing how value moves between banks, merchants, and buyers. Few PMs anywhere touch the incentive layer of global payment networks.
  • Strategy + Execution - You partner with Strategy on new commercial offerings AND ship products into production. Not a "think" role or a "do" role - it's both.
  • Global from Day 1 - Products you build and scale operate across 200+ markets. Not regional-first. Global-first.
  • Visible impact - Dynamic interchange and VCC directly drive Visa's commercial revenue growth. Your work shows up in earnings calls.
Visa requires at least 3 days in office, expectations of these days will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 5+ years with an advanced degree (MBA, JD, etc.)
  • 10+ years in product management, product development, or product strategy
  • Demonstrated success taking products from concept through launch and global scale
  • Experience working cross-functionally with technology, operations, pricing, legal, and regional teams
  • Strong execution skills in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
  • Exceptional stakeholder management - ability to influence across senior leadership and external partners

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Deep experience in interchange, commercial payments pricing, or B2B payment economics
  • Experience in commercial or B2B payments (virtual cards, purchasing cards, commercial card programs)
  • Understanding of issuer/acquirer dynamics and scheme-level product design
  • MBA or advanced degree
  • Track record of working with global clients and scaling products across multiple markets
