What is a strategic product manager?

Strategic Product Managers are professionals responsible for guiding a product's vision, strategy, and roadmap to ensure it aligns with a company's overall business goals. They analyze market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscapes to make informed decisions about product development and positioning. Their role often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as marketing, engineering, and sales, to successfully bring products to market and drive long-term growth. Strategic Product Managers focus on big-picture thinking to create value for both the company and its customers.

How does a strategic product manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive product success?

Strategic Product Managers work closely with diverse teams such as engineering, design, marketing, and sales to ensure product alignment with both customer needs and business goals. They often facilitate communication between departments, set clear priorities, and coordinate timelines to move products from concept to launch. Regular meetings, roadmapping sessions, and feedback loops are common practices to keep everyone aligned. This collaborative approach not only helps in identifying and resolving potential roadblocks early but also ensures the product delivers maximum value to the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategic product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strategic Product Manager, you need expertise in product lifecycle management, market analysis, and business strategy, typically supported by a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with roadmapping tools (like Aha! or Jira), data analytics platforms, and sometimes certifications such as Pragmatic Institute or Product Management Professional are highly valued. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and strategic thinking set standout candidates apart. These competencies ensure products align with market needs and company goals, driving successful product outcomes and long-term growth.

We believe in having a broad range of talent and backgrounds at U.S. News. We strive to maintain a welcoming and inclusive workplace where everyone is given an opportunity to succeed and contribute to their fullest.

Your role in helping us shape the future:

We are seeking a versatile and forwardโ€‘thinking Senior Product Designer & Product Manager (Hybrid) to drive innovation across our Autos and Travel verticals.

In this dualโ€‘craft role, you will bridge the gap between highโ€‘level business strategy and handsโ€‘on UX/UI execution. You will partner directly with General Managers (GMs) to define marketโ€‘winning experiences, translate business objectives into clear requirements, and use AI tools to rapidly prototype, iterate, and deliver productionโ€‘ready design assets.

If you thrive on endโ€‘toโ€‘end product ownershipโ€”from market strategy down to Jira ticket creation and pixelโ€‘perfect design deliveryโ€”this role offers unmatched influence and handsโ€‘on impact.

Are you up to the challenge?

Strategic Product Management & Execution
  • Business Partnership: Collaborate closely with GM leadership in Autos and Travel to translate revenue, engagement, and audience growth goals into crisp product strategies and experiences.
  • Requirements & User Stories: Define and write comprehensive product requirements, user stories, edgeโ€‘case scenarios, and success metrics.
  • Agile Management: Own the product backlog in Jiraโ€”writing detailed tickets, prioritizing sprints, and maintaining alignment between engineering, design, and business teams.
  • Outcome Ownership: Measure product features against key performance indicators (KPIs) and continuously optimize based on analytics, user research, and market trends.
Product Design & AI Acceleration
  • Endโ€‘toโ€‘End Design: Lead design ideation, wireframing, interactive prototyping, and final production design output across responsive web and mobile experiences.
  • AI-First Workflow: Actively leverage AI design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma AI plugins, Claude Design, etc.) to accelerate concept creation and asset generation.
  • Userโ€‘Centric Systems: Build scalable, accessible UI design patterns aligned with U.S. Newsโ€™ brand guidelines while advocating for intuitive, lowโ€‘friction user journeys.
Position RequirementsYou should definitely have:
  • 3โ€“5+ years of handsโ€‘on experience in Product Management, AND/OR
  • 3โ€“5+ years of handsโ€‘on experience in UX/UI & Product Design.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • Having both is a major plus but is not required
  • AI Tool Proficiency (Mustโ€‘Have): Deep familiarity and active handsโ€‘on proficiency with AIโ€‘assisted tools for design, ideation, copy generation, workflow automation, and prototyping.
  • Dualโ€‘Mindset Capability: Comfort transitioning fluidly between analytical business thinking (metrics, Jira backlogs, GTM alignment) and creative visual execution (Figma, layout, visual polish).
  • Communication: Ability to articulate product design choices, tradeโ€‘offs, and technical specs clearly to executive stakeholders, engineering leads, and crossโ€‘functional teams.
It would be nice if you had:
  • Prior background owning endโ€‘toโ€‘end projects from a product or design standpoint or formal ownership of crossโ€‘functional release cycles.
  • Experience working within digital publishing, eโ€‘commerce, media, or complex contentโ€‘driven verticals (e.g., automotive marketplaces, travel booking/guidance systems).
What itโ€™s like to work with us:

Talent is our best asset!

We invest in people with passion and potential who understand U.S. Newsโ€™ dedication to our consumers.

  • Entrepreneurial, missionโ€‘driven culture with core values of quality and integrity
  • Focus on fostering personal and professional growth
  • Competitive benefits including paid vacation time, medical, tuition reimbursement, and training
  • Collaborative Work Environment ~ Fun, diverse, inclusive and ambitious coโ€‘workers
