What is strategic competitive intelligence?

Strategic Competitive Intelligence is the process of gathering, analyzing, and using information about competitors, market trends, and the broader business environment to inform strategic decision-making. Professionals in this field help organizations anticipate market shifts, identify opportunities and threats, and maintain a competitive edge. This involves using both public and proprietary sources, ethical data collection, and delivering actionable insights to leadership teams. The goal is to support business strategy, product development, and long-term planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategic competitive intelligence professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strategic Competitive Intelligence professional, you need strong analytical abilities, business acumen, research skills, and typically a degree in business, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with competitive intelligence software, advanced data analytics tools, and market research platforms is often required. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and discretion are soft skills that help professionals effectively synthesize and present sensitive information. These skills are vital for providing actionable insights that inform strategic decisions and give organizations a competitive edge.

Job description

About the role

We are looking for a senior leader to provide strategy expertise in support of Vanguard’s mission, clients, products and crew. As Senior Director Strategy & Offer, Personal Wealth, you will be a critical leader helping to shape the strategy and offers for Personal Wealth.

Personal Wealth is Vanguard’s unified division focused on delivering exceptional experiences for individual investors across every stage of their financial journey. Organized around distinct client segments, the division brings together the strengths of Vanguard’s Personal Investor and Wealth Management models to provide focused advice, innovative solutions, and scalable personalization.

Through segment‑specific distribution, specialized advice and wealth capabilities, and a strong emphasis on digital and client experience transformation, Personal Wealth is designed to meet evolving client needs with both human insight and advanced technology. Our teams work collaboratively to simplify how we operate, accelerate execution, and deliver industry‑leading outcomes for millions of investors.

This is a high‑visibility role that will materially shape Personal Wealth’s strategy as we build it out this year and beyond — with direct exposure to Personal Wealth leadership and across the broader organization.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead complex, high‑impact strategic, competitive, and product analyses; partner with senior leaders to define business problems, shape analytical approaches, and guide execution.
  • Drive business and offer projects and help set the strategy; leverage team insights and manage internal partnerships to deliver against service expectations.
  • Translate complex analyses into clear, actionable recommendations; prepare and present strategic insights to senior executives through presentations, written materials, and briefings.
  • Provide thought leadership on priority strategic topics; evolve strategy frameworks and analytical approaches to strengthen enterprise decision‑making.
  • Analyze and interpret complex data to generate meaningful insights; ensure data quality and craft compelling narratives aligned to executive priorities.
  • Monitor industry, market, and competitive trends in collaboration with the competitive intelligence function; recommend new capabilities and solutions and advise business leaders on emerging opportunities and risks.
  • Lead or contribute to enterprise initiatives and special projects as needed.
  • Build, lead, and develop high‑performing teams; set clear performance expectations, provide coaching, and make compensation decisions in alignment with company policy.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in corporate strategy, management consulting, or financial analysis, ideally with a top‑tier consulting firm.
  • Demonstrated strategic judgment in highly ambiguous environments, with strength in framing complex problems and driving sound executive decisions.
  • Proven ability to independently lead large‑scale, high‑impact strategic initiatives from concept through execution.
  • Executive presence with the ability to influence without authority — crafting clear strategic narratives, aligning senior stakeholders, and driving outcomes.
  • Strong people and talent leadership, with accountability for building, developing, and sustaining high‑performing teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including executive‑level presentations and decision materials.
  • Strong commercial mindset with disciplined project execution, prioritization, and results ownership.
