What is a straight commission?

A Straight Commission job is a position where an employee or contractor earns income solely based on sales or performance rather than receiving a fixed salary or hourly wage. This means that the more sales or deals a person closes, the higher their earnings. While it offers unlimited earning potential, income can be unpredictable, especially in the beginning. This type of compensation structure is common in industries like real estate, insurance, and sales. Success in a straight commission job often depends on strong sales skills, persistence, and self-motivation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a straight commission position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Straight Commission role, strong sales skills, self-motivation, and goal orientation are essential, often supported by experience in sales or customer-facing positions. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and sales tracking tools is typically important for managing leads and performance. Excellent interpersonal communication, resilience, and persistence help individuals stand out by building relationships and handling rejection constructively. These abilities are crucial because compensation depends entirely on individual performance, making personal drive and effective sales techniques key to success.

What are the main challenges faced in a straight commission position?

One of the main challenges in a Straight Commission role is the lack of a guaranteed base salary, as earnings are solely dependent on sales performance. This can create periods of fluctuating income, especially when starting out or during slow market cycles. Successful professionals in these roles must manage their time efficiently, consistently generate new leads, and maintain a high level of motivation. However, many find this structure rewarding because it offers unlimited earning potential and direct rewards for initiative and achievement.

Roofing Sales Rep -- Base + Commission, We Train You

Petes Builders LLC

$45K - $156K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Pay: $45,000 – $156,000 per year (base + draw + commission)

Hey storm sales pros — and anyone tired of selling for a company that treats you like a number.

I’m Steve, Sales Manager at Pete’s Builders. Two years ago I was making $38K managing a restaurant. Last year I made six figures selling roofs. I’m not special — I got handed a system that works, and now I’m hiring the next three people to hand it to.

Why this sale is different

After a hailstorm, insurance pays for the roof; the homeowner just pays their deductible. You’re not asking anyone to spend $18,000 — you’re helping them collect on a policy they already pay for. Last summer’s hail across our Cheyenne area left thousands of damaged roofs, and most homeowners don’t know they qualify. That’s the job.

The money — open books, real numbers

  • Average commission: $1,800+ per job
  • First-year reps typically earn $45K–$70K
  • Average rep here: $72K. Top rep last year: $156K
  • At your interview, we show you actual commission statements

Pay your way

We offer both W-2 (base + draw + commission) and 1099 (straight commission) plans — we’ll walk you through which fits you at the interview. W-2 reps get a paycheck while they ramp plus health benefits eligibility. Either way: company truck or vehicle allowance and a gas card.

What else we provide

  • Company-generated leads — storm data plus canvassing support. No cold-calling a phone book.
  • Paid 2-week training: claims, adjuster meetings, inspections. We teach the roof — you bring the work ethic.
  • A manager who walks your first roofs and first adjuster meetings with you

Where it goes

Rep → Senior Rep (~12 months) → Team Lead with overrides → Sales Manager. Every manager we have started on the doors.

“What about winter?”

Storm season (April–Sept) is when the big checks land. October–March we run gutters, water-damage work, and a retail re-roof division. Reps earn year-round, and the draw plan smooths your income.

The ask

Knock doors, inspect roofs (ladder included — we train you), meet adjusters, walk homeowners through claims. Evenings and Saturdays in storm season. Real work. Pays like it.

How to apply

Send your name and one line on why you’re a fit. You’ll hear back within 24 hours. $1,000 referral bonus if you bring someone who lasts 90 days.
