What is a story analyst?

A Story Analyst evaluates scripts, books, and other written material to assess their potential for film, television, or other media adaptations. They write coverage reports summarizing the story, analyzing its strengths and weaknesses, and providing recommendations to executives or producers. Their insights help studios, production companies, and agencies decide which projects to develop. Strong analytical skills, industry knowledge, and storytelling expertise are essential for this role.

What does a story analyst do?

A typical day for a Story Analyst involves reading scripts or manuscripts, preparing detailed coverage reports, and evaluating projects for their storytelling strengths, weaknesses, and market potential. You’ll often juggle multiple submissions under tight deadlines, collaborating closely with development executives, producers, or literary agents to review and discuss your findings. Regular tasks include summarizing plot points, analyzing character development, and providing recommendations for next steps. You'll spend much of your time working independently, but your assessments play a crucial role in shaping a studio or agency’s content pipeline and creative direction.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a story analyst?

To thrive as a Story Analyst, you need a solid command of narrative analysis, critical reading, and industry-specific knowledge, often supported by a degree in English, Film, or a related field. Familiarity with screenplay formatting software, coverage templates, and basic data management tools is commonly required. Strong written communication, time management, and objectivity set top candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure that feedback is insightful, well-structured, and valuable for production or development teams, directly influencing project selection and success.

How do you become a story analyst?

To become a story analyst, typically one needs a bachelor's degree in film, literature, or a related field, along with strong writing and analytical skills. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions in film or television development can also be helpful, and familiarity with industry software and script analysis is often required.

How much do story analysts make?

Story analysts typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the size of the company. Entry-level analysts may start at lower salaries, while experienced professionals or those working in major markets can earn higher wages. Many story analysts work full-time and may need strong writing and analytical skills to succeed.
