Stone Carving Instructor

OVERVIEW

Arts Bonita is looking for a PART-TIME Stone Carving Instructor to teach in our expanding stone carving studio, designed to serve the large community of adult artists in our area. This specialized course will empower students to master traditional and contemporary stone carving techniques, develop their artistic vision in three-dimensional form, and safely work with stone carving tools and materials. This role can grow over time as the program expands. Classes are between 2 and 3 hours in length and serve adult students. This is a year-round position as we offer programs in all seasons.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement comprehensive stone carving curricula for adult learners of varying skill levels
  • Plan and lead stone carving classes, workshops, and demonstration events
  • Teach fundamental and advanced stone carving techniques
  • Instruct students in the proper use and maintenance of hand tools (chisels, points, rasps) and power tools (angle grinders, pneumatic tools)
  • Teach stone selection, properties of different stone types (limestone, marble, soapstone, alabaster, granite), and material sourcing
  • Demonstrate design development from concept to completion, including sketching, maquettes, and scale models
  • Enforce comprehensive safety protocols including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), dust control, ventilation, and safe handling of tools and materials
  • Manage a studio environment with up to 12 students, ensuring safe workspace organization and proper tool storage
  • Provide constructive feedback on students' technique, design choices, and artistic development
  • Create a supportive, collaborative learning environment that encourages artistic exploration
  • Assess and evaluate student progress and skill development
  • Stay current with contemporary stone carving practices, techniques, and trends in sculptural arts
  • Maintain studio equipment, tools, and facilities in safe working condition
  • Manage materials inventory and coordinate stone and supply orders
  • Collaborate with administration on budget, scheduling, and facility needs
  • Coordinate with marketing to promote courses and workshops
  • Build relationships with the greater artist and sculptor community
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Sculpture, or related field (preferred)
  • Professional experience as a stone carver or sculptor with a demonstrable portfolio of completed works
  • Proven mastery of stone carving techniques across multiple stone types
  • Comprehensive knowledge of stone carving safety protocols, including OSHA regulations for silica dust exposure and PPE requirements
  • Experience with both traditional hand tools and modern power equipment used in stone carving
  • Prior teaching or workshop facilitation experience with adults (preferred)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and ability to work well with adult learners of varying skill levels and physical abilities
  • Enthusiasm for helping artists develop their sculptural skills and artistic vision
  • Knowledge of sculpture and fine art markets, exhibition opportunities, and professional development for sculptors
  • Understanding of art history, particularly sculpture and three-dimensional art forms
  • Studio management and organizational skills, including ability to maintain a safe and efficient workspace for up to 10 students
  • Physical ability to demonstrate carving techniques and assist students with heavy materials
  • Adaptability and problem-solving abilities in teaching diverse students and managing studio challenges
  • Passion for supporting and uplifting the artistic community
