Job description

Position Summary

Under direct report of the Regional Operations Manager (ROM), assist in supporting Operations with preparing optimum ship
schedules within the region, and other ports under HQ’s control as needed. Coordinate with respective Port Authorities and agents best
vessel berthing for anticipated operations. Coordinate vessel operations with local terminals, stevedores, processors, surveyors, and
customers when lining up and attending vessel operations. Schedules are shared and confirmed locally prior to vessel arrival, during
port stay, and upon sailing.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Cargo and Terminal Operations:
Under direct report of the ROM, assist below jobs.
• Manage staff who will oversee cargo receiving in terminals.
• Adequate yard space and daily receiving
• Enforce cargo received is per NYK standards,
• Cargo is accounted for, reported, and staged in terminals for load back. Cargo scheduled to load is
accurate, properly marked/staged, and is reconciled with stowage plans
2. Vessel attendances:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Supervise cargo discharge and load operations at ports within region. May be needed to attend operations at
other ports as needed.
• NYK standards are being observed
• Stevedores following load plans, shifting, discharge as per instructed by planning office
• Cross check/report stow plans, summaries, and actual space used when loading. Pre and post vessel
operations
• Provide handling notes for various cargo
• Furnish vessel attendance report outlining all pertinent operational info
* On vessel (s) or at Port (s):
Shall instruct Chief Officer or duty officer(s) necessary requirements and instructions for safe smooth
operations while on vessels.
Shall instruct Stevedore Supervisor/Superintendents necessary requirements and instructions for safe smooth
operations while in terminals.
3. Operational and Cargo related support:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Coordinate vessel operations with local port authorities, terminals, stevedores, surveyors, and customers
when lining up and attending vessel operations.
• Ensuring cargo scheduled to load is accurate, properly marked/staged and is reconciled between load
lists and stowage plans.
• Ensuring cargo scheduled to discharge is accurate and properly manifested. Cargo plans, manifests,
and documentation are reconciled prior to discharge.
• Yard space, routes, special needs considered for both discharge and load back.
4. Cargo and Port Investigation:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
• Investigate/report cargo handling capabilities for ports as requested by upper management and NYK
offices/teams.
• Investigate/report port information as requested by upper management and other NYK offices/teams.
• Provide feedback on cargo handling inquiries, with equipment / securing requirements for safe
handling of cargo.
5. Quality Control / Damage Prevention:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Monitor and Supervise local Stevedores’ performance within their region as stated above. Work with Safe
Cargo Work Promotions Committee members in sharing quality information, resulting in damage free / high
service quality for our customers. Work together with our Claim Team as needed.
6. Support in Vendor Contract Negotiations:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Provide intimate insight to Procurement on vendor performance in the areas of production, costs, challenges,
and damages in order to best protect NYK’s interests and lowering our operating costs. Help set up contracts
in new port start up

7. Monitoring Agents’ performance:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Monitor/Supervise local agents’ performance in ports within their region.
8. Cost Control:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
• Control and minimize vessel costs in areas such as but not limited to port, cargo, and terminal expenses.
Coordinate with all parties as stated above
• Report on savings and expenditures monthly
• Check vendors’ invoices to ensure correct billing and charges
• Record payment and the production within their region
• Work with Cost Control Team for advance cost estimations as needed
• Prepare cargo resumes for port tariff payments
• Provide information and support during vendor contract negotiations
9. Marine Operational Technical Support:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Support various departments/offices with technical support as needed. Assist Upper Management as
requested.
10. Customer Service Care and Support:
Under direct report of the ROM, execute below jobs.
Maintain close contact and good relationships with the customers in ports. Share any feedback and/or
requirements with RHQ/HQ. Support our Sales and CSR’s when dealing with customers.
11. Support Cargo Care Coordinators and Terminal Operations:
• Support staff who will oversee cargo receiving activity in terminals as per CCC job description,
examples such as:
• Correct cargo dims, port pairs, descriptions, and equipment reported
• Verified with Dock Receipts and captured in PRESTO
• Provide Ground Lists twice a week for Track/Trace
• Load Guides capturing all cargo for loading as per SOP
• Summarize terminal storage costs by customer account and provide internal departments for customer
billing
• Vessel close out


  •  SPECIAL SKILLS
    Maritime academy graduate with USCG License is preferred
    Broad understanding of maritime industry, including future trends
    Basic knowledge of vessel trim & stability
    Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
    Motivation and patience to attack problems and propose creative solutions
    Excellent written and verbal communication
    PC Skills to include MS Excel, Outlook, Teams.
    Adaptability to internal programs for stowage planning and cargo databases
  • PREFERRED EDUCATION
    Bachelor's degree, or in active pursuit of Bachelor's degree
  • WORK EXPERIENCE
    5 years experience with vessel and cargo operations
    Sailing on RoRo vessels or RoRo stevedoring/terminal experience a plus
