Job Summary

The Surgical Instrument Sharpening & Repair Technician is responsible for inspecting, sharpening, repairing, reconditioning, and testing surgical instruments used in medical and surgical procedures. This position ensures instruments meet manufacturer specifications, hospital standards, and quality requirements to support patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes. The technician works with a wide variety of surgical instruments, including scissors, forceps, clamps, needle holders, osteotomes, curettes, and specialty instruments.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

  • Inspect surgical instruments for wear, damage, corrosion, alignment issues, and functional defects.
  • Sharpen and restore cutting edges on surgical scissors, osteotomes, curettes, knives, and other precision instruments.
  • Repair, adjust, realign, and refurbish surgical instruments to restore proper function.
  • Replace worn or damaged components such as springs, screws, inserts, and jaws as required.
  • Test instrument performance, alignment, sharpness, and functionality using specialized measuring and testing equipment.
  • Maintain documentation of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Follow established quality control procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate with Sterile Processing Department (SPD) personnel, Operating Room staff, and customers regarding instrument conditions and repair recommendations.
  • Maintain repair equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Assist in identifying instruments that are beyond repair and recommend replacement options.
  • Support instrument tray optimization and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Preferred
    • Certification in surgical instrument repair or related field.

Experience:

  • Preferred
    • Surgical instrument repair, sharpening, sterile processing, manufacturing, or precision metalworking.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Required
    • Valid State Issue Driver’s License
