What is a Step intern?

Step Interns are students or recent graduates who participate in the Google STEP (Student Training in Engineering Program) Internship. This program is designed for first and second-year undergraduate students with a passion for computer science. STEP Interns work on software engineering projects, receive mentorship, and participate in professional development activities. The program aims to foster diversity in tech by providing valuable industry experience to underrepresented groups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Step intern?

To thrive as a STEP Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of computer science, programming skills (often in languages like Python, Java, or C++), and enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with technical tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), code editors, and potentially cloud platforms is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and eagerness to learn help candidates excel in team-based and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing effectively to technical projects and making the most of the internship experience.

What types of projects do Step interns typically work on and how does this experience contribute to their professional development?

Step Interns often participate in real-world projects under the guidance of experienced engineers, focusing on tasks such as coding, debugging, and collaborating on team-based software solutions. These projects are designed to help interns develop technical skills, gain exposure to industry-standard tools, and learn best practices in software engineering. Working closely with mentors and other interns, Step Interns also improve their problem-solving abilities and communication skills, which are valuable assets for a future career in technology.

What is the difference between Step Intern vs Intern?

AspectStep InternIntern

The main difference between a Step Intern and an Intern is that a Step Intern often participates in structured training programs with specific skill development, usually in technical or industrial settings. An Intern generally has a broader, less specialized role, focusing on gaining general work experience across various industries.

How competitive is the Step Intern internship?

The Step Intern internship is generally competitive, with many applicants vying for limited positions. Selection often considers academic performance, relevant skills, and enthusiasm for the role, which typically involves project work and collaboration. Strong applications with relevant coursework or prior experience tend to have better chances of acceptance.

Personal Trainer Career Accelerator Program (PTCAP)

Launch your PT career with real-world experience

What is it?

Our PTCAP is a combination mentorship/internship program designed for aspiring personal trainers who want hands-on experience in a professional studio environment before stepping into a regular training role. This is your opportunity to learn, grow, and test the waters of a personal training career - without the pressure of a major commitment.

Shadow experienced trainers, learn client interaction, session flow, and studio operations. Unpaid: your investment in your own career growth

Assist with studio tasks: cleaning, admin, client check-ins. Begin light session support under supervision.

Paid an hourly administrative rate for contribution time

Phase 3: Hands-On Experience (Weeks 6-12)

Co-lead programming, warmups, cooldowns, small session segments, assessments and movement screens. Build coaching confidence with guidance.

  • Gain real-world experience in a supportive environment
  • Build confidence before stepping into a client-facing role
  • Get paid for your contributions while you learn
