What is a steel rule die?

A steel rule die is a specialized tool used to cut, shape, or form materials like paper, cardboard, rubber, foam, and plastics. It consists of a flat base, usually made from wood or composite materials, into which thin strips of hardened steel (the 'rule') are embedded in the desired cutting pattern. Steel rule dies are commonly used in industries such as packaging, gasket manufacturing, and textiles for producing precise, repeatable shapes. They are valued for their cost-effectiveness and versatility, especially for short to medium production runs. The dies are typically used in conjunction with a die-cutting press.

What Are Steel Rule Die Jobs?

Steel rule die jobs focus on helping process materials using cutting tools and equipment. In this field, you select the best process for manufacturing needs, operate a cutting press, and otherwise participate in the cutting process. Many companies use steel rule die cutting for shorter runs of soft materials like foam and plastic, although it is also used to cut materials such as sheet metal. Most jobs in this industry focus on manufacturing products and operating equipment, though you may also find supervisory or maintenance positions. Steel rule die workers may work on weekends, though factories usually shut down for major holidays.

What is the difference between Steel Rule Die vs Die Cutter?

AspectSteel Rule DieDie Cutter
Design & ConstructionCustom metal die with steel rules for cuttingMachine that uses blades or dies to cut materials
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or print shopsPackaging, printing, and manufacturing facilities
Common UsagePrecise cutting of paper, cardboard, and thin materialsHigh-volume or complex cutting tasks

Steel Rule Dies are custom-made metal tools used for precise cutting of various materials, often in print and packaging industries. Die Cutters are machines that utilize these or similar dies to perform cutting operations. While Steel Rule Dies are the tools, Die Cutters are the equipment that executes the cutting process. Both are essential in manufacturing workflows involving cutting tasks, but they serve different roles: one as the tool, the other as the machine.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Steel Rule Die Maker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Steel Rule Die Maker, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with blueprint reading, often supported by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Proficiency with CAD software, die-making machinery, and hand tools is commonly required in this role. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and manual dexterity are important soft skills that help ensure quality workmanship. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing accurate dies that meet manufacturing specifications and support efficient production processes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in steel rule die making, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in steel rule die making often face challenges such as maintaining high precision, meeting tight production deadlines, and handling complex design specifications. Achieving accuracy requires careful attention to detail and frequent calibration of tools and machines. Effective communication with design teams and thorough review of customer specifications can help minimize errors. Staying updated on the latest die-making technologies and continuous training also support efficiency and quality in the role.

Job description

Die Maker (Steel Rule / Laser Die) - Sharples Die

Location: North Attleboro (Massachusetts) | Department: Operations | Reports to: Plant Manager | Status: Hourly (non-exempt)

Sharples Die is a long-established die shop known for high-quality steel rule and laser die solutions, serving customers across packaging, thermoforming, and specialty industrial applications. We build tooling using modern processes like CNC rule bending, water-jet cutting, and lasers-while still valuing the craftsmanship that separates "good" dies from great ones.

If you're a die maker who takes pride in precision, tight tolerance work, and problem-solving in a fast-moving environment, we want to talk.

What you'll do
  • Build, assemble, and repair steel rule cutting dies, stripping fixtures, and related tooling to customer/job specs

  • Cut, bend, notch, and fit rule using automated and manual equipment (Serviform, EasyBender, or equivalent)

  • Insert, grind, and secure rule into die boards for proper fit, alignment, and cutting tolerance

  • Read and interpret CAD drawings, blueprints, and job tickets with strong accuracy

  • Rubber dies and support rubbering/blanking/stripping processes as needed

  • Modify and revise existing dies when specs change or rework is required

  • Inspect and verify quality (dimensions, tolerance, craftsmanship) and correct non-conformances

  • Perform basic preventative maintenance (cleaning, adjustments, minor repairs) on die-making equipment

  • Use computer systems for job tracking, data entry, and time recording (ERP systems such as CyFrame/4D or similar)

  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe work area and collaborate with CAD/production to resolve questions quickly

What we're looking for

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and craftsmanship with high attention to detail

  • Ability to read/interpret prints and CAD-driven job documentation

  • Comfortable using hand tools and shop equipment for die build and repair

  • Basic computer skills (job tracking, time entry, production systems)

  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate clearly with the team

Preferred

  • 1–3 years of experience in steel rule die making, die cutting, or related converting/manufacturing

  • Familiarity with packaging, printing, converting, carton converting, thermoforming, or specialty tooling environments

  • Experience with rubbering, blanking, stripping, and tooling revisions

  • Experience on CNC rule bending / automated benders and related tooling processes

Physical & work environment
  • Stand on concrete flooring for extended periods

  • Frequent bending/stooping; repetitive hand/arm motions using tools

  • Lift up to 65 lbs (over 65 lbs with assistance)

  • Manufacturing environment with moderate-to-high noise and airborne dust; PPE required

Why Sharples
  • A company known for steel rule dies and related tooling, with a reputation built on customer commitment and craftsmanship

  • Work alongside a team using modern die-making technology (CNC bending, water-jet cutting, and lasers)

  • Benefits include competitive wages, health & dental insurance, 401(k), paid holidays, vacation, bonuses, and development opportunities

Sharples Die is an equal opportunity employer.
