Job description

Kern Steel has provided Southern and Central California communities with structural steel fabrication services for over 60 years. Come join our dynamic project management team in Bakersfield, CA!
The Project Manager plans, directs, and coordinates activities of designated structural steel projects to ensure projects are completed according to bid specification. Maintains a strong business relationship with our customers.
  • Schedules and conducts pre-construction and kick-off meetings.
  • Responsible for all project communication between the customer, design team, detailers, erectors, and other site subcontractors.
  • Assign tasks to project coordinators for coordination of detailing schedules, detail drawings, installation drawings, RFI's, and other activities.
  • Monitor detailing schedules to maintain on time delivery to meet or exceed drawings due date for fabrication.
  • Coordinate purchasing of material with purchasing agent.
  • Assist with material substitutions and use of KSF inventory to reduce costs.
  • Coordinate drawing packages to the production department for shop fabrication and assign project coordinators as needed.
  • Coordinate delivery schedules and transportation with Kern Steel Fabrication (KSF) assistant foreman and field unloading company.
  • Coordinate all field related activities with subcontractors.
  • Initiate all KSF change order requests (CORs) and follow up on the status of each.
  • Ensure COR project logs are maintained in the required KSF systems.
  • Coordinate billing requests with customer requirements, project coordinators, and accounting.
  • Continuous monitoring of expended costs against the KSF budget through final close-out of the project.
  • Initiate official notice requirements to customers and subcontractors per contract agreements.
  • Facilitate project close-out meetings and/or memos (depending on the size of the project).
  • Responsible for meeting or exceeding project gross profit.
  • Responsible for day-to-day decisions on projects to ensure schedules, budgets, and the needs of projects are met.
  • Maintain adherence to company policies, quality, safety, and environmental standards as outlined in roles and responsibilities.
  • Communicate with Sr. Project Manager regarding budget issues before, during, and after costs are incurred.
  • Escalate contract concerns or problems in advance of them impacting projects.

Requirements
Education & Experience:
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or related field preferred. High school diploma combined with additional experience may be acceptable.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in construction project management - strongly prefer structural steel industry.
  • Must have a valid driver license and insurable driver record.
  • Experience with a fast-paced, results-driven environment.

Knowledge of:
  • General construction and structural steel.
  • AISC Code of Standard Practice preferred.
  • Strong client-facing and teamwork skills.
  • Construction software and tools (Microsoft Project, Trimble, ProCore, etc.)
  • Math and computer skills.

Ability to:
  • Read and comprehend construction documents, specifically architectural and structural plans and specifications.
  • Be organized, focused, and demonstrate detail-oriented work.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Work independently and in a team.

Salary Description
$110,000 - $150,000 per year
