What is steel processing?

Steel processing refers to the series of operations involved in transforming raw steel into finished products that meet specific requirements for various industries. This process can include cutting, shaping, heat treating, coating, and other methods to enhance the steel's properties and prepare it for use in construction, manufacturing, automotive, and other sectors. Steel processing ensures that the material meets standards for strength, durability, and performance. Companies specializing in steel processing may handle everything from raw material sourcing to final product fabrication. The goal is to deliver steel components that are ready for their intended applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in steel processing?

To thrive in Steel Processing, you need a strong understanding of metallurgy, manufacturing processes, and safety protocols, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machinery, industrial automation systems, and quality control tools is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help professionals excel in high-stakes industrial environments. These abilities are crucial for ensuring product quality, workplace safety, and efficient operations in steel manufacturing.

What are some common challenges faced in steel processing roles, and how can new employees prepare for them?

Steel processing professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict quality standards, managing heavy machinery safely, and working in environments with high temperatures and noise levels. New employees can prepare by familiarizing themselves with safety protocols, learning the basics of steel grades and processing methods, and developing attention to detail for quality inspections. Teamwork is essential, as most operations require close coordination with machine operators, quality control staff, and logistics teams to ensure smooth workflow and on-time delivery.

What is the difference between Steel Processing vs Steel Fabrication?

AspectSteel ProcessingSteel Fabrication
Primary FocusPreparing raw steel materials through cutting, shaping, and finishingConstructing structures or components by assembling steel parts
Work EnvironmentFactories, steel mills, processing plantsWorkshops, construction sites, manufacturing facilities
Common CertificationsOSHA safety training, equipment operation certificationsWelding certifications, OSHA safety training
Industry UsageSteel mills, processing plants, supply chainConstruction, shipbuilding, industrial manufacturing

Steel Processing involves preparing raw steel materials through cutting, shaping, and finishing processes. Steel Fabrication, on the other hand, focuses on constructing structures or components by assembling steel parts. While both roles operate within the steel industry and may require safety and equipment certifications, their primary functions and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

About Fluidstack
We exist to make humanity more free. For most of human history, you farmed or you starved. Technology gave people more time for the things they wanted to do, instead of things they had to do. Powerful AI will be the biggest lever for human choice we've ever built - but only if models are aligned with what humanity actually wants. There are groups building AI who don't share these goals. Whoever deploys frontier compute infrastructure fastest will decide whether AI expands human freedom or shrinks it.
We're singularly focused on delivering 10 to 100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else, rethinking every layer of the stack. We acquire power, design and build data centers, and operate them - with teams spanning hardware and software. Speed and scale are our key differentiators. Come be a part of building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI.
We hire people who care deeply about this problem space. If that is you, please apply!
How We Operate
  • Extreme ownership. Full autonomy. Own things end to end often taking on scope outside your core role without being asked to get things done.
  • Velocity. We drive everything forward as fast as possible.
  • First principles. Challenge every assumption. Zero analogy thinking, no egos, the best idea wins.
  • Love of the game. The frontier of AI is the most interesting problem of our time. We put in long hours at high intensity to push the frontier forward.
Role Scope
  • Own CNC and structural steel processing: beam lines, plate processing, saws, and drills running at takt.
  • Program and optimize the machines: nesting, tooling, and cycle times that feed downstream without piles.
  • Commission new steel processing equipment and prove it to rate.
  • Own the tooling and preventive maintenance strategy so uptime holds through the ramp.
What We're Looking For
  • The below is a starting point. We always make space for exceptional people, so if you don't fit this role exactly, tell us where you would.
  • You've engineered CNC or steel processing operations in a structural or heavy fabrication environment.
  • You've programmed beam lines or plate processing equipment.
  • You nest for material yield and know what a point of yield is worth.
  • You've owned equipment uptime and driven it with data.
  • You work the floor with operators, not above them.
  • Bonus: Peddinghaus, Ficep, or Voortman platforms. CAM systems. Tekla interface. Cutting and drilling process depth.

We are committed to pay equity and transparency.
