Job description

Position Summary:

The Steel Detailer is responsible for preparing detailed shop drawings, erection drawings, material lists, and related documentation for steel fabrication projects. This position works closely with project managers, shop personnel, customers, engineers, and vendors to ensure that fabrication drawings accurately reflect project specifications, contract documents, and applicable codes and standards. The role requires strong attention to detail, technical knowledge, and the ability to coordinate multiple projects while maintaining quality and production schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed fabrication and erection drawings for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and various other fabrications.
  • Interpret drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Develop bills of material, cutting lists, and shop release documents.
  • Verify dimensions, connections, member sizes, and material requirements.
  • Coordinate drawing revisions and maintain revision control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between drawings, specifications, and field conditions.
  • Communicate with project managers, engineers, customers, and fabricators regarding design questions and drawing clarifications.
  • Assist with Requests for Information (RFIs) and incorporate approved changes into fabrication drawings.
  • Prepare and submit drawings for approval and track approval status.
  • Support procurement activities by providing material information and quantities.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation.
  • Work closely with shop personnel to answer fabrication questions and resolve detailing issues.
  • Ensure compliance with customer requirements, AISC standards, and company quality procedures.
  • Report potential design conflicts or production concerns promptly.

Qualifications:

  • Experience as a steel detailer or similar position in the steel fabrication industry preferred.
  • Proficiency with detailing software such as Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, SDS/2, or similar programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret design drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of steel fabrication practices, connections, and erection methods.
  • Familiarity with AISC standards and industry practices.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be punctual and possess a strong work ethic.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with ProNest Nesting Software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of AWS welding symbols and steel connection details.
  • Familiarity with material specifications and steel terminology.
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes, including cutting, fitting, welding, and assembly.

Work Environment:

  • Office environment within a steel fabrication facility.
  • Frequent interaction with project managers, shop personnel, customers, engineers, and vendors.
  • Requires extended periods of computer work and occasional visits to the fabrication shop.
  • May involve overtime or project-specific schedules to meet customer deadlines.
