What are steel companies?

Steel companies are businesses involved in the manufacturing, processing, and distribution of steel and steel products. They play a crucial role in supplying raw and finished steel materials to various industries such as construction, automotive, machinery, and infrastructure. These companies may engage in activities like mining raw materials, smelting, rolling, and fabricating steel into usable products. Some steel companies operate globally, while others serve specific regional markets.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in steel companies, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in steel companies often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing technologies, maintaining strict safety standards, and meeting production targets under tight deadlines. Collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—such as engineering, operations, and quality assurance—is essential for solving production bottlenecks and ensuring product quality. Proactively seeking training on new equipment, staying updated on industry best practices, and fostering open communication within teams can help address these challenges and support career growth within the organization.

What is the difference between Steel Companies vs Steel Fabricators?

Steel companies focus on producing and supplying steel materials, while steel fabricators specialize in transforming those materials into finished structures. Both roles are essential in the steel industry, but they differ in their core functions, work environments, and certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a steel company role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a steel company role, you typically need a strong background in metallurgy, mechanical or industrial engineering, or related technical fields, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with CAD software, industrial automation systems, and plant management tools is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help individuals excel in complex production environments. These competencies are crucial for maintaining safety, efficiency, and product quality in the highly technical and competitive steel industry.

The Business Systems Analyst is responsible for supporting and optimizing the SAP S/4HANA system by translating business requirements into effective technical solutions. This role includes providing ongoing production support to ensure system stability, resolve issues, and maintain uninterrupted business operations. The analyst is actively involved across the full project lifecycle—gathering requirements, contributing to solution design, performing hands-on configuration, and supporting testing, implementation, and post-go-live activities. This position is based in Overland Park, KS; however, it supports projects that require consistent, project-based travel. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment are essential for success.

SPS Companies, Inc. is a privately-held family of steel companies committed to excellence in performance, safety, and customer care. Employment here is fulfilling beyond financial compensation, with industry-leading benefits. We use SAP S/4HANA to control key business processes and serve as the backbone of our supply chain, moving millions of tons of steel annually.

  • Performs hands-on configuration of the system based on approved requirements.
  • Participates in integration and unit testing to help ensure solutions work as intended.
  • Helps develop and follow testing plans to validate system changes.
  • Assists in creating project documentation and training materials, supports go-live activities, and helps with knowledge transfer to end users and support staff.
  • Follows project and department policies, completes required documentation, and provides updates on project progress as needed.
  • Performs additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team and project goals.

Physical & Work Requirements:

  • 40 to 60% travel as required
  • May require evening or weekend work

Required Background, Competencies & Expertise:

  • Basic understanding of system configuration with a willingness to develop hands-on technical skills
  • Ability to gather and clearly document business requirements and functional specifications
  • Familiarity with SAP process flows and integration concepts
  • Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, able to effectively collaborate with both technical and business teams
  • Highly motivated with a strong desire to learn, grow, and deepen knowledge in business systems
  • Proficient in creating clear and accurate documentation
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks responsibly
  • Adaptable and flexible in responding to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Energetic, driven, and eager to take on new challenges
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience supporting SAP systems or business processes
  • Master data management
  • Steel industry experience

  • Company covers about 80% of the cost of medical insurance for you and your family
  • Company covers 100% of the cost for a life-insurance policy
