JOB SUMMARY
The Industrial Maintenance Supervisor, Mechanical is responsible for leading maintenance operations within a heavy industrial steel manufacturing facility, with a primary emphasis on mechanical systems, equipment reliability, maintenance execution, and equipment uptime. This position supervises a team of mechanical and Electrical maintenance technicians while ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of critical production equipment.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience in heavy industrial environments and demonstrated leadership in maintenance supervision. This role serves as a key member of plant leadership and partners closely with Production, Engineering, Reliability, Electrical/Automation, and Safety to drive operational excellence, reduce downtime, improve equipment performance, and maximize asset reliability.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead all maintenance safety programs and ensure compliance with OSHA, LOTO, hot work, confined space, fall protection, machine guarding, and company safety standards.
  • Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting, repairing, upgrading, and installing mechanical systems across steelmaking, casting, rolling, and material handling operations.
  • Oversee maintenance activities for hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, pumps, compressors, gearboxes, conveyors, cranes, hoists, rotating equipment, and process water systems.
  • Coordinate planned outages, shutdowns, equipment rebuilds, and major maintenance projects to minimize downtime and maximize production reliability.
  • Direct resources during emergency breakdowns and ensure timely execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Lead reliability-centered maintenance initiatives, root cause failure analyses (RCFA), and continuous improvement efforts to improve equipment performance and extend asset life.
  • Develop, mentor, and manage maintenance personnel through training, performance management, succession planning, and apprenticeship programs.
  • Optimize labor utilization, contractor performance, maintenance planning, scheduling, and CMMS effectiveness to support plant operational goals.
  • Partner with Production, Engineering, Reliability, and Electrical/Automation teams to resolve equipment issues and execute capital improvement projects.
  • Maintain maintenance standards, procedures, technical documentation, and equipment records while promoting a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 3 years of industrial maintenance experience in heavy manufacturing, mining, foundries, refineries, power generation, or steel manufacturing environments.
  • Minimum 5 years of maintenance leadership or supervisory experience required.
  • Journeyman Millwright, Industrial Mechanic, or equivalent mechanical trade credentials preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field preferred, or 7 years of equivalent mechanical maintenance experience in heavy industry.
  • Proven experience managing maintenance operations within a 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting Rolling Mills, Electric Arc Furnaces, Continuous Casting Operations, Finishing Mills, or similar heavy industrial operations preferred.
  • Experience supervising a union workforce preferred.
  • Experience leading capital projects and major equipment installations preferred.
  • Experience executing large-scale equipment rebuilds, shutdowns, and outage work preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading maintenance teams focused on reliability, safety, and operational performance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
  • Strong knowledge of industrial mechanical systems including gearboxes, bearings, shafts, couplings, drives, power transmission equipment, and rotating machinery.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems including pumps, valves, cylinders, accumulators, piping, and control systems.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatic systems including compressors, actuators, valves, cylinders, and associated controls.
  • Experience with pumps, process water systems, cooling water systems, lubrication systems, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of conveyors, material handling systems, cranes, hoists, and lifting equipment.
  • Familiarity with rolling mill, steelmaking, and continuous casting equipment and associated mechanical systems.
  • Understanding of predictive and preventive maintenance practices, including vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasound, alignment, balancing, and lubrication programs.
  • Experience performing mechanical failure analysis, root cause investigations, and reliability-centered maintenance initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of welding, fabrication, rigging, precision maintenance, equipment installation, and balancing techniques.
  • Familiarity with electrical and automation systems, CMMS platforms, maintenance planning processes, and OSHA safety requirements including LOTO, confined space, hot work, and fall protection.

Compensation: $100,000 - $110,000
