What is a steel burner?

A Steel Burner is a skilled worker who cuts and processes metal using oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, or other heat-based cutting tools. They typically work in scrapyards, steel fabrication shops, or construction sites to dismantle metal structures, cut steel plates, or prepare materials for recycling or reuse. The job requires knowledge of cutting techniques, safety procedures, and proper handling of equipment. Steel Burners must also read blueprints or work orders to ensure precision in their cuts. Safety gear, such as protective eyewear and fire-resistant clothing, is essential due to the high heat and potential hazards of the job.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a steel burner?

Steel Burners are primarily responsible for using specialized cutting torches to section steel structures, beams, or plates according to project specifications. Each day, they interpret blueprints, prepare work areas, select appropriate cutting tools, and ensure all safety measures are strictly followed. Steel Burners also inspect and maintain their equipment, remove scrap materials, and often collaborate closely with welders, riggers, and supervisors to coordinate workflow. This hands-on role requires focus on precision and safety, making teamwork and clear communication vital for successful project completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the steel burner position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Steel Burner, you need expertise in oxy-fuel and plasma cutting techniques, along with a strong understanding of metal properties and blueprint reading, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with industrial cutting equipment, personal protective gear, and adherence to safety standards or OSHA certification is typical in this role. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are soft skills that set standout steel burners apart. These qualities are essential to ensure precision, safety, and efficiency in the demanding environments of steel fabrication and demolition projects.

How much do steel burners make?

Steel burners typically earn an average annual salary of around $40,000 to $60,000, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Skilled steel burners who work in industrial settings or have specialized training may earn higher wages. The job often requires knowledge of safety protocols and the use of welding and cutting tools.
