What does a steam presser do?

A Steam Presser is responsible for using steam-powered pressing machines to remove wrinkles and shape garments, fabrics, or other textile products. They work primarily in laundries, dry cleaners, or garment manufacturing facilities. Their duties involve operating steam presses, ensuring proper temperature and pressure settings, and inspecting finished items for quality. Steam Pressers must pay close attention to detail to avoid damaging delicate fabrics and to achieve a professional finish.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a steam presser, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Steam Presser, you need attention to detail, manual dexterity, and knowledge of garment fabrics and care procedures, often gained through on-the-job training or experience in laundry or dry cleaning services. Familiarity with commercial pressing machines, steamers, and related equipment is essential for the role. Strong time management, reliability, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure help set high-performing pressers apart. These skills ensure garments are finished to professional standards, supporting customer satisfaction and operational productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by steam pressers, and how can they be managed on the job?

Steam Pressers often encounter challenges such as handling delicate fabrics without causing damage, maintaining consistent quality under time pressure, and safely operating hot equipment. To manage these issues, it's important to stay attentive to fabric care instructions, use proper pressing techniques, and follow safety protocols to prevent burns or equipment malfunctions. Many employers provide on-the-job training to help new pressers build confidence and efficiency, and teamwork with other laundry or garment workers can help manage workflow during busy periods.

Job description

Tom James is the world's largest manufacturer and retailer of made-to-order clothing and the engine behind one of the most established tailored clothing brands.  As one of the few remaining vertically integrated clothing retailers-controlling the entire manufacturing process 'from sheep to suit' - we offer unparalleled value to those with an eye for quality.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, proactive individual to join our team at our Brown & Church location in Pilot Mountain, NC. Brown & Church, a division of Tom James Company, is an American-made neckwear company that produces ties, bow ties, and pocket squares by hand in North Carolina. Established in 1976, the company has a history that includes the legacy of classic neckwear brands like Keys & Lockwood. They emphasize their artisan production, high-quality materials, and connection to American manufacturing heritage.

We are seeking a Hand Presser to operate a steam iron to smooth, shape, and remove wrinkles from garments or textiles, requiring attention to detail, knowledge of fabrics, and physical stamina to handle machines and materials, focusing on tasks like setting controls, inspecting for defects, and preparing finished items to move to the next operation.
Responsibilities
  • Operate a manual steam iron to press garments
  • Inspect for stains, damage, and fabric defects; measure finished product to ensure it meets qualifications
  • Adjust temperature, steam, and pressure settings for different fabrics (silk, wool, etc.)
  • Clean and maintain pressing equipment and work area

Essential Skills and Requirements
  • Attention to detail - identify defects and ensure quality
  • Ability to judge correct settings for different materials
  • Good hand skills for delicate fabrics
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions and sit/stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work in a fast-paces, production-driven environment

Tom James / Brown & Church is an industry leader, and we have grown steadily every year we've been in business. Our worldwide team is made up of smart, dedicated, interesting people who make terrific coworkers. We offer a competitive starting salary, an outstanding benefits package including paid vacation and holidays, medical, dental, and vision insurance, short- & long-term disability, and a pension plan.
