The Office of Informatics and Information Technology (IIT) is seeking an outstanding candidate for a Data Scientist II position to manage and fulfill research data needs for a grant funded project. The responsibilities of the incumbent will include collaborating with faculty, staff, and research partners to support the design and execution of research studies using robust and scientifically sound data strategies. This role will involve contributing to research design, extracting and integrating data from sources such as electronic health records, transforming and curating data to create highquality, researchready datasets, and supporting analytic efforts aligned with study objectives. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining clear documentation of data sources, methodologies, and assumptions to support transparency, reproducibility, and effective collaboration.

This role offers unique opportunities to contribute to innovative research and development within our team.

It is anticipated that this position will be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Documents approaches to address research questions and contributes to the establishment of reproducible research methodologies and analysis workflows

  • Composes and assembles reproducible workflows and reports to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators

  • Independently identifies and implements appropriate data science techniques to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher including data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining

  • Organizes and automates project steps for data preparation and analysis

  • Prepares data sets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources

School of Medicine and Public Health, Office of Informatics and Information Technology, Research Data Services.

This position is within the School of Medicine and Public Health's Office of Informatics and Information Technology (IIT). IIT is a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, engineers, developers, and IT support staff. We offer a variety of Informatics and IT services to departments and research staff within the School of Medicine and Public Health and beyond to support the conduct of high-quality clinical and translational research.

  • Informatics:We provide innovative solutions and training for a broad spectrum of clinical and translational research utilizing real-world data to facilitate rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice, with an emphasis on precision medicine, healthcare delivery, and population health.

  • Technology Solutions:We provide technology solutions to the School of Medicine and Public Health including cybersecurity, educational technology, and IT support.

This role is part of the Clinical Research Data Services (CRDS) team within SMPH-IIT. The CRDS team plays a critical role in advancing clinical research across SMPH by providing comprehensive data and computational support to investigators and research teams. CRDS team members provide support with research design, data extractions, data transformation and compute needs.

CRDS is dedicated to enabling high-quality, data-driven research. The CRDS team collaborates with faculty, staff, and research partners to ensure studies are designed and executed using robust data strategies. Services include support for research design, data extraction and integration from sources such as electronic health records, data transformation and analysis to create research ready datasets.

This position and the CRDS team offer the opportunity to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment that values innovation, precision, and impact in clinical research.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $80,000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Experience writing SQL code to extract and manipulate data from large relational databases
  • Experience writing Python code to manipulate and analyze datasets
  • Experience developing analytics dashboards
  • Strong organizational, analytical, verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with Electronic Medical Records (EMR)/Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified in Epic Cogito / Clarity / Caboodle
  • Data science or biostatistics experience
  • Experience working with medical images and associated reports
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining databases
  • Experience with clinical vocabularies (ICD, LOINC, SNOMED, CPT, etc.)
  • Experience with clinical research common data models (OMOP, i2b2, PCORNet)
  • Experience working with web APIs
  • Experience with FHIR and HL7 data feeds
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and other regulations governing PHI
  • Experience reviewing other team members' technical work and providing constructive feedback
Education:

Bachelor's degree preferred
