To thrive as a Statistical Programmer Intern, you need a solid understanding of statistics, programming (especially in SAS, R, or Python), and basic data analysis, often supported by progress toward a degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software, data visualization tools, and version control systems like Git is often expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help interns effectively manage data tasks and collaborate with team members. These competencies are vital for ensuring accurate data processing, clear reporting, and successful contribution to research or clinical projects.

What types of projects do Statistical Programmer Interns typically work on, and how do these contribute to larger team objectives?

Statistical Programmer Interns often assist in tasks such as cleaning and analyzing clinical or research data, creating data visualizations, and writing code for statistical analyses under the supervision of experienced programmers. These projects contribute to larger team objectives by supporting data-driven decision-making, ensuring data integrity, and helping to prepare reports for regulatory submissions or publication. Interns usually collaborate closely with biostatisticians, data managers, and other programmers, gaining exposure to real-world challenges and learning how their work fits into broader organizational goals.

What does a Statistical Programmer Intern do?

A Statistical Programmer Intern supports data analysis and reporting for clinical trials or research projects by writing and validating statistical programs, often using software like SAS, R, or Python. They collaborate with statisticians and data managers to ensure the accuracy and integrity of datasets and outputs. Interns may also assist in creating tables, listings, and figures for regulatory submissions or publications, providing valuable hands-on experience in the field of biostatistics or data science.

Description of Job Function:
The Data Engineering Intern will work directly with the Business Intelligence team to support the development and maintenance of automated data pipelines, data infrastructure, and analytics workflows. This is a hands-on role. The intern will contribute to real production work alongside the team, gaining practical experience with cloud-based data engineering tools including Azure Databricks and Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2. This internship is well-suited for a student with foundational Python and SQL skills who wants to grow in data engineering and sees a career path in building the systems that power business intelligence and AI.
Responsibilities:
AI and this role
The intern in this role will use AI-assisted coding tools including Claude Code and Cursor as part of their standard development workflow and will have visibility into the team's broader AI initiatives. We are looking for someone who has already used AI tools in a meaningful way and is eager to go further. Familiarity with prompt engineering or LLM-based workflows is a plus.
What you'll work on
  • Assist in building and maintaining automated data pipelines in Azure Databricks
  • Write and optimize SQL queries against operational data sources
  • Support ingestion pipeline development for source systems including internal databases and APIs
  • Help organize and structure data in Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 following established patterns
  • Contribute to notebook development, job scheduling, and pipeline testing in Databricks
  • Document pipeline logic, data flows, and process runbooks
  • Assist in evaluating and integrating AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor) into the team's development workflow
  • Explore and research emerging data engineering and AI tools as directed by the Manager

What you'll learn
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks - notebooks, jobs, and workflow orchestration
  • Practical exposure to cloud data lake architecture using Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2
  • Real-world data pipeline development using Python and pandas in a production environment
  • Introduction to Delta Lake table formats and data layering concepts
  • How a small, high-ownership BI and data team operates end to end

Qualifications
Required:
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, or a related field - all levels welcome including undergraduate, graduate, and recent grads
  • Working knowledge of Python - comfortable writing scripts and working with pandas
  • Foundational SQL skills - able to write basic to intermediate queries against relational databases
  • Curiosity, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new tools quickly

Preferred:
  • Any exposure to cloud platforms - Azure, AWS, or GCP
  • Familiarity with Notebooks or similar notebook-based development environments
  • Experience with Git or version control basics
  • Prior coursework or project experience in data engineering, ETL, or database design
  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) in a development workflow
